90's 3D thread. There's just something about the simplicity of 3D graphics at that time that I find really appealing.

Quest 64 is one of those games that I find surreal that it even exists. Like, I never saw it being played or actively advertised, and at the same time it looks so simultaneously generic and wannabe iconic, like it was supposed to be "THE 3D adventure/RPG on the N64" and everybody was ideally supposed to have played it, but didn't.

In Japan and Europe it's a game called Holy Magic Century, and didn't feel like it ever really got that much of a push.
I think it was the American marketing that really tried to hone in on the idea of this being THE RPG for the N64.
Japan has a bunch more that we didn't get anyway, like Shiren and Custom Robo.

I remember seeing commercials on TV for it. Quest 64 is one of those games I know is extremely mediocre but I have a soft spot for it, it's not like the N64 was all I had either. My brother had a PS1 so I had access to JRPGs there. It had some good ideas but it was definitely a victim of cartridge limitations and limited budget. There was a decent amount of cut content most notably additional party members.

Check out this sub, there's people actually limiting their graphics to match what would be possible on PS1 console. I'm sure there's something similar for N64.

Replayed FFIX recently, graphics/atmosphere/pacing is just as good as I remember it being as a dumb ESL child with trouble reading the dialogue and being wowed by GFX and Nobuo Uematsu masterpiece soundtrack.

I want to go back. The graphics of these early titles were right on the edge of realism and allowing your mind to fill in the gaps. The worlds felt mysterious and like you jumped in an alternate universe. With modern games I don't get that kind of immersion at all, I see a gaming product. Specifically because "back in the day" a game was made by a handful of people, so you know they could get away with a lot. Today everything has to be approved and no one on the team is exactly winging it.

Thought this was the coolest shit back then. Comanche already did it in the early 90's but it was quite lo-fi

Has any other retro 3D game had the pure SOVL of Mechwarrior 2?

Those clean, hi-res (it natively rendered up to an unimaginable 720p) gourad-shaded vector graphics were changed in ALL the ports because they so quickly became very very unfashionable compared to blurry, blocky low-res texture-mapped polygons, but DAMN they aged better.

yeah lol, I mean I think the story was an afterthought, cleary. Still, what a great game to package with your OS, this kicks solitaires ass. I always wonder if Mac gaming survived as an independent platform what the general vibes would be, if there would be a graphical 'style' that separated it from windows games due to the hardware differences etc. I want to visit alt-history where Halo is a Mac exclusive and see what then Halo 2 and 3 would have been.

I only recently found out there was a sequel. Also, I got the best ending where you chill by the pool after giving up your quest. >>10194256

This stuff was lit, I wonder if midwinter used the same engine

3d was so interesting in the 90s, now it’s all polys and fake voxels. No more on the fly rendering engines with non polygonal measurements. Those engines, if given the same love as the ones we have now, would have surpassed what capable today by so fucking much it’s insane.
