Everything else worth mentioning coming out is either Android 12 or Windows 10/11 based, thus redundant for me and my phone/tablet combo. Yeah, it turned out it was quite easy indeed. The only part that gave me some trouble is that apparently all European consoles need their region to be set to UK and mine was set to my home country, so the exploit kept failing. But it was smooth sailing once I got over that.

I like it, I dare say it's the most comfortable handheld I own. It has nice oval SNES controller shape and stacked shoulder buttons, that alone makes it much better than 90% of anbernig handhelds. The analog sticks have quite low area of travel, but they are also quite precise. The D-pad and face buttons use rubber pads over membrane and feel satisfying to press. I personally didn't have any problems with false diagonals. I beat Rayman 2 (Dreamcast version) on it and it played nicely, not once did I feel hampered by the controller. The display resolution (640x480) makes it ideal for Dreamcast games because that's the res they run at. PS1 games also look very nice, you can retain the original resolution of 320x240 with integer scaling or use enhanced resolution to get sharper image. Battery life is between 4 and 6 hours, pretty standard for an ARM handheld. Sleep mode on Linux is fucked though, and drains battery way faster than it should. You pretty much have to turn it off if you don't use it for long periods of time. Not a huge problem for me because it starts up quite fast.

A reminder that the GBA SP was the 1st all around good handheld in both hardware and software out of the box, the previous models all had screens that were hard and uncomfortable to see, which hurt the immersion and overall experience, not allowing players to focus solely on what they were playing and how it truly looked, this was especially awful in the OG GBA with its good color pallete that we couldn't even see, besides the Nintendo handhelds we had some that gave us a backlit screen, but at the cost of eating up batteries too quickly and/or not having a memorable library, I guess we could say that the 1st good one was actually the GB Light, but its release was too limited and it came out just before the GBC, poor timing. After that the GBA Micro came out and it was just too small to play for long periods of time without getting hand cramps, the DS was also fine with its GBA compatibility, but then they removed it, and overall it was just too gimmicky, same for the 3DS. PSP was decent, good screen and serviceable library, just a shame the analog sucked, but as a whole it was fine, PS Vita improved on many things, but the library was worse and Sony didn't support it properly, now we also have the Switch Lite which is probably the last "official" handheld, and it's a damn good one.

Overall "official" handhelds were always somewhat subpar, I guess an IPS display mod can do the trick for older GB models, but when it comes to out of the box, GBA SP was the 1st genuinely good one all around. As flawed as they can be in many ways, these emulation handhelds we have nowadays are a treat, not only do we have way more options than back then, with Nintendo's monopoly pretty much, but all of them have screens we can actually see, and most aren't too small like a GBA Micro, aren't gimmicky like DS/3DS, have proper sticks unlike the PSP, have batteries that last way longer than Game Gear, and overall do more right than wrong depending on the model, we've never had it better.

I don't know if this is just me over reacting, but I get the feeling that these threads have been getting way more negative recently, with many people getting quite upset and being downright rude at times. I never truly loved the thing, mostly due to having very few cartridges my uncle bought me as a gift that weren't really my style of video game, mostly a few arcade ports and stuff, and The Sims aswell for some reason, and I struggled to play due to the screen not being backlit, my hopes of playing in the dark before bed were ruined, and then the SP came out and its screen mogged mine so much it was hard to not feel bad about it, if I still had it I'd do an IPS mod or something, and get the cartridges I really wanted as a kid... I'm not that anon, but I think it definitely is. It's still got a lot of untapped potential, besides the fact it runs PS1/psp plus Vita games with mgs2/3 and ffx ports that are really good. It's got tons of emulators, even scummvm, also good ports of star control 2 and fallout 2. A few years ago it became extremely easy to softmod and has licked up some traction again, because it really is a powerful little machine.

With the ils tip it is fairly beginner friendly, you can tin all the pads for the new rom chip with the stock tip, then switch tips and get the rom in place and literally go in and touch each leg 1 by 1 with the ils.
Zero skill, the actual difficulty is removing the old mask rom, and getting the adapter pcb on instead

This is the one flaw. The Retroid Pocket 2S was wise to move the dpad in alignment with the face buttons, but that's otherwise a piece of junk with a shit screen weak core and no wifi. If Anbernic follows up with some kind of 405MX or whatever they want to call it and fix the layout, that'll seal the deal.
