It’s actually confirmed that the 3 different power modes that GammaOS introduces help with its thermals quite substantially whilst keeping the same power. Having access to the custom GPU drivers that are also what they use in the RP3+ helps with power too.

At a glance it's cheaper than something like a Odin Pro, more powerful and has an AMOLED screen.

RG405V is the one. It's the only vertical chinkheld with a gyroscope and can use android gbc and gba emulators with gyro support. Hopefully the accelerometer would be in the right spot for you. The Ayaneos have gyro too but its overkill to get those for kirby.

As someone who has a 405m for a week before selling it, GammaOS is a bit overblown. It just makes the device how it should have been when it launched. So no weird screen aliasing, L2/R2 working in apps and streaming. It installs Daijisho for you which is nice but not exactly difficult to setup on your own either.
The one killer feature of GammaOS and the only reason I'd consider getting it is how good the performance modes are. The highest one boosts it up to RP3+ levels of T618 efficiency and the Battery Saver mode is godlike at saving power. So if a really long battery life is a huge factor for you, then yeah it's worth it. Otherwise, it's just the 405m with all its hardware positives and negatives still intact.

I took a punt because I really wanted a handheld with that screen and I doubt there will ever another like it, and unless Nil magically stops being chinked by his supplier, I really don't see more than a few hundred of these actually getting made. So in that regard, I'm content.

The Retroid Pocket 3+ and Anbernic RG405M both look really good but I'm not sure which one is for me, or if I should hold out for something a little more powerful in the same size / form factor. The kinds of games I'd be playing on a retro handheld would be mostly 4/3 so that and the slightly more pocketable size are what the Anbernic has going for it, but I do think the Retroid looks really nice, the screen is higher end, the control layout makes more sense for D-pad heavy retro games (90% of the stuff I'd be playing on a retro handheld with that chipset), it's got stacked shoulder buttons, and it has HDMI out so I could resume games on a TV if I want.

Maybe when the KT-R1 gets some of its wrinkles ironed out and the price goes down a little it will be the real Goldilocks retro handheld, or maybe the next handheld from Anbernic or Retroid is going to really nail things down. I don't know. It all makes me kind of hesitant to plop down cash for anything right now because I'm not sure which one's the best fit for me.

I won't be lured into getting something bigger and significantly more expensive like the Ayn Odin though, because at that point I might as well just bring my Steam Deck or Switch. I've got kind of a min max mindset right now and I'm not really looking for something in between pocketable and baggable.

I don't remember what folder paths I followed to find it, but after seeing RGC do something similar on another console (in order to achieve the opposite effect), I found the config file that lists every emulator with some info by them and what game file extensions they look for, and was able to make PS1 acknowledge/show .bin files in ArkOS so I don't need to select them directly through RetroArch (just added ".bin" next to ".cue .iso .chd" etc in the text file). I tried to find out where I did it but gave up after a few minutes, so if it's anything anyone else here wanted to do for themselves at least you know it's possible.

If there was one compromise I'd be willing to make on my ideal "goldilocks" handheld, it would be to split the difference and have a 3x2 screen. The poor battery life of the deck is an issue, but not as much of an issue as people make it out to be. If you know you're going to be going for a long period of time without being able to recharge, just turn the TDP down, maybe lower the GPU speed, and stick to lower end games like SNES and GBA. You'll easily get over 9 hours of battery life. If you still need more than that, you can just buy a power bank.
Beyond that, most airplanes have sockets to charge devices, you can buy a usb-c charger for your car, most coffee shops and a fair number of fast food places have outlets, ect.

If I'm emulating 6th gen or older, the Deck battery lasts a long time. It's only when I'm playing PS3 or modern PC games I really start to sweat about battery. BG3, Cyberpunk and Death Stranding eat the battery like crazy, but I beat Mega Man Legends on a single charge.

Battery replacements are readily available, I got some myself.

It was able to play everything up to the PSP and Dreamcast as best as the emulators could. Dreamcast games ran at 60FPS on it and I remember experiencing the development for getting things to render better over the span of a few months. PPSSPP was always hit or miss, only the popular games were focused on for benchmarking which means even the Nvidia Shield Tablet K1 still can't run Armored Core Formula Front at steady framerate.

Last time I checked earlier this year, these are going for like $60 on eBay. They're great emulation tablets but make sure to never leave the WiFi running when not using it because it slows the fuck out of it. If you're gonna watch YouTube or streams, make sure to use the lowest video quality or else it hangs a lot. I use mine for reading comic books and offline videos, but if I want to play a game, I stick to emulation cause not a lot of modern android games play nice with it for some reason.

I've had some jittery performance with Pro Skater 3 on N64, but stuff like Mario and Star Fox run fine for me but I need to test more games.
As for the restart button, I'm not sure what you mean. I have the default setting where you press start and select twice at the same time and it brings you back to the main menu. No risk of closing games by accident for me.
If you're referring to the button southeast of the dpad, I'm not entirely sure what that does.
