Do you ever imagine what the world is like in retro cityscape backgrounds?

Like on the weekend does Sonic go to the city sometimes, get himself some bread? Maybe put a bit of butter on it?

Used to do. But nah. Most things will never be known.

I break the 4th wall and accept its a character in a fake game world. Only Sonic amd me are real.

Yeah man. I did this too as a kid, still do it a bit today.

Playing Sonic was great as a kid with an active imagination. I would wonder about the background of every stage, the hugeness of it all, the intricacy of something like Death Egg zone and all the myriad mazes and paths that must exist in the huge spaceship.

Like I'd look at the hills in green hill and imagine Robotnik is waiting somewhere in the background, Sonic looping around for miles to reach the end of the zone.

Then Sonic is outside the City at sunset in Spring Yard, but then reaches it in Starlight Zone late at night, with dawn starting to break when he finally arrives at Scrap Brain.

Sonic would go to the city to get laid by human women. Robuttnik would go get laid by the anthro women.

I like to imagine that there's a perfect paradise beyond, where the real only real problem is the one I'm currently solving.

The strangeness is one of the reasons why I like the art direction of old Sonic. It's very, very heavy and surreal. Almost dreamlike, which is interesting because the original version of Sonic was allegedly supposed to be a set in a dream. They're full of impossibly giant buildings. Casino and Carnival Zone have zero logical sense to the real world. Places like Hydrocity and Marble Garden are extremely otherworldly. The whole game is still full of slopes and loops with checkered bricks like something that Dali would invent.

Not specifically the intricacies of daily life, but I always enjoy the idea of a world existing beyond the confines of the playable game. Any grand, sweeping background which indicates a larger world can really help make the game for me.

FFX's Zanarkand used to make me feel like this. I would wonder what it was like just living in a city like that.

Did they ever have a level+background that actually worked like that? Sky Sanctuary is probably the closest iirc. Kind of seems like a wasted opportunity not to have a level like that, that shows you rotating slowly around a central point (and likely ascending/descending) in order to reach the goal; which you would see in the bg at some point before you reach it. Rather than just regular left->right with repeating parallax background.
Actually rereading I'm not sure you meant looping literally like that, but still an interesting idea that I don't think they did much if at all.

Especially with the restored UFOs. Don't get me wrong I'm glad they removed them because I find them distracting and too much in general, but they do add a lot of atmosphere that is missing without them. Takes it from some old Romanesque ruins to some kind of ancient aliens vibe. Maybe they could have made them smaller, or only appear in certain sections. The latter would be very spoopy methinks, like if you resurface from the underground section at the end (as you always do before the goal) and they're just there all of a sudden floating ominously.

Yeah, as they were at the time of removal they looked retarded. Way too many

YES, a lot and I still think about it.
I did a thread a month ago, I always wondered about game backgrounds, ie streets of rage if you could go through any door or path (backalley rain continuation stage).
Maybe we could generate this with AI in the future.

I had similar thoughts of being able to jump into arbitrary layers of the background in a platformers, namely Sonic. Pretty sure some Saturn titles did this (and Sonic CD kind of) but it was usually just two layers and they looked mostly the same. Don't think it would work as a gameplay element honestly, but maybe someone creative enough could make it cohesive.

I always think about the Sonic CD special stages.
They're so otherworldly, yet look like actual places compared to other special stages.

People shouldn't do that, because the result is Sonic fucking Adventure

On the contrary, I find the compulsion to reduce everything to concrete reality disconnecting. One of the reasons "cyberpunk" [used to] work as a genre is because there's a certain level of fantasy abstraction to it, the media focuses on the off-grid adventures of the fringe heroes going up against the evil. We don't have to spend time watching the daily drudgery of the average peon's life in the kind of daily jobs that would be necessary to maintain that high tech skyscraper and neon dominated society. When we're reminded that the real world we inhabit today is pretty much the cyberpunk we feared in our youth, the whole concept just becomes bland and offputting. Fantasy should remain fantasy, archetypes and narrative exist for a reason. Don't fixate on "but where do they go to the bathroom".

I love any stage that has a brightly lit cityscape in the background. Streets of Rage is full of these. I also think Neon Night Riders from Turtles in Time looks awesome.
