Why wasn't this game more popular? It was an RPG with a non-grid based battle movement system in real time, simple yet elegant workarounds to reduce the hassle of backtracking, a natural leveling system that worked off the SaGa/FF2 concept of gaining in stats you used without being retarded/broken about it, enough variety in the spells to justify replays focusing on different elements, no load times, gorgeous graphics, an excellent soundtrack, and an interesting albeit simple story.

Probably because it looks like a huge pile of shit and has a story to match.

It is probably the most generic you could be when it comes to an RPG, down to the name of the game. It is incredibly slow paced. And it was also has a very negative history involving its release.

SNES had a huge amount of successful rpgs for it, but Sony snatched up Final Fantasy 7. N64 was lacking in RPGs so Quest 64 was hyped as "the first rpg for the N64". And with the hype behind it, it ended up being incredibly bland especially in comparison to FF7 which was released around the same time.

I loved the SNES rpgs so I remember this all happening in real time. It sucked. I'm still bitter about Quest 64.

You wanna know why this game isn't popular? 3 simple letters THQ. It was the modern day LJN, they fucked everything up the ass. They couldn't even do ports right. I mean fuck, how do you screw up porting the Phantasy Star series to GBA? Well you start by not adding IV to the compilation yet leaving 3 which was the least popular in the series, then you fuck up the sound and let it pass through quality control unnoticed.

THQ is the stamp of death.

If you level up wrong, it becomes impossible

>> No.1016949

It was rushed and unbalanced for one thing.

Protip to game developers. If you give your player the option to pick between 4 elements, don't make 2 of them useless.

Gameplay mechanics was golden but an rpg with uninteresting story, uninteresting characters, uninteresting environments (only highland, shamwood and limelin were decent), uninteresting lore (once again only highland, shamwood and limelin were decent) and uninteresting bosses is pretty much the death knell for a game like this.

The soundtrack is catchy but nothing to write home about. The graphics are nice but lacks charm. And the meta-game in terms of combat while complex can easily be overshadowed by the fact that the investment trade off in elements peak's around the mid 30's.

Quest 64 feels like a lost opportunity and honestly needs a spiritual sequel to redeem both the game and it's original concept.

I personally think it is far from a terrible game, though it could have been better. I thought it was fairly average to slightly above average. I do like growth mechanics that aren't experience points, levels, and semi-set stat growth, and that it tried something a bit different for battles.

While the story wasn't Earth shattering, I liked the fact that it wasn't so intrusive in which you find yourself playing the game more than either reading or watching the game which I always find as a plus.

To be fair, the Gameboy Advance couldn't really do any sounds well. Whether it be Sword of Mana or Pokemon Emerald, it all sounded muffled and a lot of games had a very faint static sound to them.

But as far as Genesis games go, it shouldn't mattter, the fact is they have game testers and they are supposed to report any issues with the quality of the game in any way. So either the people testing the game were deaf, or didn't care, or they pointed out the terrible tinny sound and reported it but THQ being the crapfest it is decided to ignore it.

I'd love to find a copy of this game someday, actually. I fondly remember renting it on a whim and liking the general aesthetic and the exploring. And the big, sweeping theme that plays as you venture out to the first town was really memorable. I recall staying the night at my friend's house and being woken early in the morning by that very theme as my bud's little brother played the game.

Might've been a shitty RPG, but ah well.

AVGN didn't come up with this. People have disliked LJN for a long time due to the fact that the vast majority of the games they published were crap. You do know that right? Some of us are still feeling the sting from buying/playing games like Arcade's Revenge. You might as well claim that people only like classic Capcom because of Egoraptor.

It's stupid and retarded to think that because people may share opinions on something that they could not form it on their own. Of course, this is assuming AVGN even dislikes LJN. I wouldn't know because I've never watched his videos.

Hey, it says THQ right on the cover. LJN was a video game publishing company, they never developed any games in-house. If they think that THQ is the modern day LJN, then that should mean that the games they license are bad ones.
