Nah. Too many shitty gimmicks ruined that game, not to mention the puke-inducing aesthetics and ear-grating bgm/sfx.

Judging from how many people have issues with pretty basic grabbing concept in 2d, I can't imagine how that would work in *early* 3D. The same early 3D on which many 2d series and developers have tripped.

Shit, people still can't accept 3D Sonic. Grabbing stuff in all directions could've been painful. If anything, Ristar needs a 2.5D approach, sorta like Castle of Illusion remake or recent Kirby games.

So this game was made by Sonic people? Did the character have any cameos in Sonic games, or are they legit ashamed of it?

>> No.10169013

>In the early 1990s, Sega asked its development teams to create a mascot to rival Nintendo's Mario.[12] One proposed character had long rabbit-like ears which could extend and pick up objects, but this was discarded as too complex[5] The team moved on to animals that could roll into a ball, and settled on Sonic the Hedgehog.[12][13] Some years later, Sega developed another prototype, Feel,[14][15] with a character that used its arms to pick things up instead of ears,[16] which became Ristar.[17]

That Feel

>> No.10169016

>>10169013
>Ristar, as a character, has only made a few minor cameo appearances outside of his two original games in 1995. In Sega's two Shenmue games for the Dreamcast, Shenmue and Shenmue II, the player can choose to spend money to purchase a randomly selected collectible 'Gachapons' (capsule toys) from a machine; one of the possibilities in both games is a Ristar figurine.[53][54] He also briefly appeared in the introductory video of the 2001 Japan-only Dreamcast game Segagaga.[55] Ristar did not make any more appearances until 2010, where he makes a cameo appearance in a downloadable track for Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing due to the high demand for him to be in the game.[56] He also made an appearance as a flagman in the sequel, Sonic & All-Stars Racing Transformed, in 2012.[57] In 2012, Ristar was cited by GameSpot as one of the examples of lost video games from the 1990s that deserved to return.[58]

weird scaling, bilinear filters and often a lot of incompetence in how to properly figure on good visuals for a 3D-oriented system. just look at Mortal Kombat Trilogy, which is fugly as hell because the devs didn't care for consistency and it makes it look like a sloppy fan project.

Yeah, the N64 was also notorious for how small texture sizes usually were.

If you were to mod the N64 to remove anti-aliasing and texture filtering, or emulate with something that gives you texture filtering options like nearest neighbour, Mischief Makers would probably look a lot better where everything is using pre-rendered sprites.

https://consolemods.org/wiki/N64:N64blur

Someone made gameplay footage of this in effect, and it actually does look a lot better.

Mischief Makers is one of those games that has never had any kind of re-release and might not ever, due to it being published by Enix (now Square Enix). If anything, there's a small hope it gets made available on Nintendo Switch Online's N64 expansion pack service, but that's likely gonna be made to look "authentic" to the original N64 release and blurry as shit.

Biggest zoomer revisionist meme that no one complained about back in the day. PS1 looked just as blurry through composite which everyone used

>> No.10170657

>>10170571
Dumbass. PS1 was crisper even with composite, but suffered imprecise vertexes and heavy dithering on many 3D titles. N64 was always the more visually stable system, but was suffering from weirdness even back then with its rare 2D games as nothing was sharp, and there was bilinear filtering for everything.

Sure, no kids knew the terms, and they weren't gonna be reading internet articles or magazines telling them what it was, but as someone who had both, there was always a distinction between the two, between the sharp pixels of Metal Gear Solid and the soft look of Ocarina of Time.
