Here we go. No unboxing because who fucking cares? You guys really want to know how the stick feels, right? Its pretty good. But from the beginning:
pretty good weight, not too light, not too heavy. Only thing that rattles when shaking are the shoulder buttons. Shoulder buttons are not clicky, they feel more like Dual Shock L & R, they feel good, way better than retrobit saturn controller shoulder buttons.
Face buttons are basic, nothing bad, nothing good (well that yellow color looks like diarrhea). Start, select are made of some kind of rubber, good in my opinion.
I'm glad to announce that stick feels pretty good. Did a quick test on KoF 98 with Shermie since she has a lot of half-circles and quarter-circles and had near 100% successful inputs.
clicks are not too loud, it gives you a bit of slack before engaging the switches and the switches feel more on a lighter side. I can compare them to Cherry D44L in my LS-32. Diagonals are also where they suppose to be (small arrows)
>>10159807
I play mostly shmups so quick left-right and up-down is good. Quick righ-down and similar without diagonal is doable but really needs training. Definitely better than my ascii pad for ps2

The disassembly confirms it. You can see the four microswitches turned inside on the d-pad assembly which line up with how the original looks and works

I was thinking this as well, but I think they needed to strike a balance between retro and modern. The neo pad 2/3 has smaller buttons and isn't nearly as well known as the original and the addition of shoulder bumpers is easy to do and gives more functionality for non-neo games

I got mine today. I think it's pretty damn good but I've never used an OG Neo Geo controller so I can't compare on that regard. Quality feels similar to their M30 pad which I really like as well. I hate their terrible SNES controllers so I'm glad this one feels great.

>> No.10162000

If 8bitdo made a wired controller with a 4-button layout and an 8-direction d-pad, then I'd consider buying it. The M30 is nice, tried one from someone else, but it's not fully to my taste. First, it's wireless. Second, not every game fares well with a 6-button layout. Are there any controllers like the one I described? So far (more than a decade), my best match is a Logitech F310, though its analog sticks and triggers are very mediocre.

Can anyone who has owned multiple pads (Original, Pocket Color, PS2/3, and New) compare them? I have a PS2 one and the travel distance of the stick is unacceptable compared to a dpad. nta, but you sound very, let's be polite and say "confused". The "adapter" is just something that communicates with the controller and the PC. It has nothing to do with what the controller is able to do all on its own. The part in the controller may be perfectly capable of doing BT. It looks like I was mistaken, they did have 6 face buttons, but sadly they have them flanking the start button. It is sort of like the Xbox black and white buttons, while still there, they are just not as convenient for play use. Also it looks like a 2xSai filter was applied to Shiranui but not the flames which is also inconsistent with the look of the '97 logo on the lower right (and why '97 specifically?).

>>10161350
>>10161406
They did take the effort in adding the shoulders and 2 more buttons on the sides of the start button, they could have just just used the 6 button layout to fit more games without adding analog sticks.

You know, you could connect it using the usb cable like most modern controllers.

For me the m30 is one of the best comfy controllers I have ever used, Switch Pro is also comfy but not for 2d gaming.

How I set the buttons for a SNES config? Think of a inverted T with the following mapping from SNES to M30 controller:
Y->A
B->B
A->C
X->Y
L, R, start and select are the same.

Most games dont use all 4 buttons, mostly X is like a second "Select" button or some shit like that so it doesn't affect me too much. Of course it would be weird for Street Fighter or Smash TV but for most games it is perfect.

Think SMW, A for running, B for jumping, C for spin jump. Zelda, A for Items, B for sword, C for running/grab, Y for Map. Super Metroid, I change the controllers here but I also do it for the Snes controller, shoot with A, jump with B, run with C, Y is for deselecting items. I even play some PSX games but I admit it isn't great for that.

uh that's a weird questions since you hold them entirely different in your hand. But if you want an answer: it feels like a pocket ls-32 or maybe ls-40 (don't have one). Compared to d-pads it feels like saturn dpad with more feedback thanks to the clicky switches. I think something like 623 can be a bit tricky since it naturally drives your through diagonal (kinda). I mostly played on ps1 dpad as a kid.

I'd say their d-pads are on par with a DS4 for what that's worth, and are only good if you're coming from an Xbox or Switch controller

Brazilians are based /vr/ appreciators. Not by choose but it checks out. You're more likely to find retro gaming buddies there than most other countries except France, UK and Japan.

To be fair, I somewhat understand. Remember that we’re on /vr/, and all it takes to see through 8bitdo’s shotty reproduction of the SNES dpad is experience on an original SNES controller, which most of us probably have. Now, I am going to say in the grand scheme, 8bitdo indeed have some of the highest quality buttons, build, etc of any non hori third party controller I’ve seen however they skimp on components you might overlook. One of the biggest problems on their SN30 line of controllers is the poor contacts on the PCB, I’m unsure of the details but the membranes don’t make the best contact and at best I can mash the button so the contacts, however this is fatiguing and flat out unacceptable for any difficult shmups (and I’d guess fighting games) while annoying for anything outside a simple RPG. That’s not the worst of it, though, as mashing also tends to lead to accidental down and up presses and makes rolling the dpad left and right near impossible as when the pivot is pressed in the middle both directions will just barely register causing inputs to flicker between left and right. I was playing through Touhou 19 on hard just trying to finish the game quickly after work, and it would’ve been damn near impossible with an 8bitdo controller.

With all of that said, it’s exactly in anon’s original post, 8bitdo controllers are great for normies who might at best play a retro throwback game or replay Mario World a couple of times and needs a good controller for like 15 bucks. For retro gaming enthusiasts or those playing any difficult d-pad reliant game, I don’t think I’d recommend the 8bitdo controllers I’ve used. That’s why the ultimate Bluetooth controller was my favorite, the sticks felt good and is great for modern games, could also be used for sixth and seventh gen games if you’d really like to make me feel like a grandma and qualify those as retro. That said I’d rather use the original controller in those cases still

I've had a few Retrobit megadrive 6button pads which I've been hammering on for a couple of years now without a single issue, recommended.

Mine developed a dodgy connection somewhere inside the wire and the membrane on one of the buttons was starting to give out. They sent a replacement but the longevity of the controller is in question. Be gentle on those wires anon.

>never held the original controller in their life
yeah and we both know you haven't held the new one either so don't pretend like you're any better.

Wireless here. Were you using the megadrive or saturn pad?

megadrive pad. To be fair, I was playing paprium when it came out non stop and a lot of that game is spamming one button repeatedly I blame it for the membrane.

Will it work with the Neo Geo Mini if I use a USB-C OTG adapter?

>> No.10178862

The box already has a adapter for the mini. In fact this controller was made with the mini in mind and is the main compatible system.

I'm from Brazil, and that's not entirely true. Surely, if you look at raw numbers, you might find more people who like retrogaming than in many countries around the world; however, they will still be a minority. If you pick a random gamer from Brazil, it's more likely that he will like modern stuff only, and even more certain that it will be the current FIFA game and, maybe, some shooter to spice things up. Another issue: Brazil is even bigger than contiguous USA, so retrogamers here will be geographically spread to the point you'll feel lucky to have a buddy to play /vr/ with.

The issue is, you would need to own a Neo Geo Mini in the first place. Those minis are the worst of the arcade minis iirc. I am wondering which of the tate mini arcade units are best for emulating the Neo Geo.

The Neo Geo Mini was definitely the least impressive of the mini consoles I've owned. For starters, it doesn't look like the American arcade unit at all which made it feel a lot less nostalgic to me. The video quality is crap with no options for integer scaling or interpolation which was almost a deal breaker except I got a really good deal on the red Samurai Shodown one, which I have enjoyed for what I've used it. The controllers are kind of crap though, even though they do work. Visually they're a plausible enough facsimile of the Neo CD controllers but without microswitch joysticks you immediately realize something's off with them.

Picrel is the North American Neo Geo mini we should have gotten, or something close to it. It's not perfect but this could have all been done with the same toolings as the Japanese version so there's really no excuse. Hell they even made a red version for the limited Christmas release, but the buttons and stick were the wrong colors (gold). I feel like this thing was a real missed opportunity.

And here's an even better example of what it should have been, had SNK bothered to put the time and money needed into really giving North American fans what we wanted. I've never seen a Japanese Neo Geo in person but I have many fond memories of the Big Red MVS. I almost bought one at Goodwill and missing out on that is one of my biggest regrets.

That makes sense, same deal as with everyone else then. Still nice that you have a large retro scene
