Will I get anytthing out of Jagged Alliance 2 if I play Jagged Alliance 1 first? Same for Deadly Games.

Heard so many great things about JA2, and I generally love strategy RPG types of games. I've heard pretty good things about JA1 and next to nothing about Deadly Games, but I've also never heard anything *bad* about them either.

My backlog is huge, so right now I'm just trying to play the peak kino from it, and from everything I've seen JA2 is it. I also know at least JA1 is story-lite, is there any through lines besides returning Mercs?
Anything really relevant, or is it just some nice easter eggs thats nice to have but not really impactful?

Jagged Alliance Franchise thread as well.

I don't see much JA or any western squad tactics around /vr/. honestly I'd probably rather try /vst/ in your place.
JA1 is shorter (about half as long) and has less of a strategic overlay (comparing to XCOM, it's like if everything on geoscape is only in the second game). but if I remember right, stuff like rudimentary crafting is exclusive to JA1, as well as certain merc behavior that I won't spoil.
you won't feel like you've missed out on some context if you skip straight to JA2, but they are different enough that it isn't just a straight upgrade over the first game.

i bet 90% of JA fans (myself inclded) started with 2 and then went back and played 1 and DG afterwards.
the old ones have a "stripped down" appeal versus 2 - the combat is a lot simpler, and merc management is much easier (though merc interactions are more meaningful in the old games.)
the biggest thing you will get out of playing the old ones are small callbacks, as well as sone of the backstories on the mercs in AIM and MERC. you can get most of it from reading the bios and the documentation on the game laptop, so in truth you wont miss anything. i guess some of the surprise characters that show up later might resonate more, but JA2 really is standalone.
