They advertised the shit out of Magical Mirror on Cartoon Network and Nickelodeon during summer 2002.
Sunshine came out a few months before. It was supposed to move systems but its TV commercials were very homosexual. Perhaps they pushed Mickey to help Mario. Otherwise, Capcom barely supported Nintendo during the 64 era and they probably really wanted them back as a reliable 3rd party dev. To their credit, they won them back with Gamecube.

Back during the first year of launch the game was being advertised pretty hard by Disney as something big. I remember seeing advertisements for it on G4 (pre-TechTV merger). Of course Nintendo being thirsty as fuck for titles obviously included it hoping it would be a golden goose egg. It's funny in retrospect that they didn't include Animal Crossing into this 2002 advertisement for obvious reasons and now 15-20 years later its an extremely popular franchise.

These advertisements were specifically targeted at male adolescents and it did the job well when information was hard to come by of upcoming titles. And much of it just followed trends which is why there was a major shift in advertisement tone between 92-95 (see: Nirvana's influence on the cultural media landscape). I do look at these threads with nostalgia, much in the same way a boomer in the early 90's saw 'call to order' VHS tapes of 1950's-early 60's commercials as a gateway to nostalgia, but as someone who's now in his mid 30's, I can't say I'd necessarily see this as better than advertisement today. After all, what is the point of advertisement? To sell something to its targeted demographic. If its doing the job and the product is sold, then the advertisement has achieved its goal. Magazines are no longer needed since there is now an insane amount of other avenues that to sell young teenagers stuff these days.
I mean take a look at this infamous Pole Position commercial from Atari in 1983:

It's a badass high production commercial, but only 6 out of its 60 second length is for the game itself. This was a dominating trend that only started loosening up throughout 5th-6th generation consoles since game footage itself was not enough to 'wow' the masses. Even games like FFVII would focus entirely on prerendered cutscenes for commercial usage in order to get the game sold.
These commercials and magazine ads could be make or breaks for a game selling well. If it fell flat, it could damage sales and the game could be a flop. Hence why a lot of time and effort was pumped into them. You no longer need that because the internet exists and word of mouth goes much further than it ever has in the past.
