Metal Slug is not really much of a platformer. It's a run n' gun.
Also: no entry in the MS series is as good as VSMB.

Wonderboy is pretty good. Better than the NES ripoff known as Adventure Island.

I've been playing around with making a "VS. Super Mario Bros. 2" rom hack. Progress is very slow.

Sonic the hedgehog is amazing it's the fastest game around and the music is incredible. It has style. And the bonus stages look fantastic

The developers are on record saying the game was rushed and they needed more time to properly balance it. And in this case I actually believe them rather than taking it as standard Japanese boilerplate (90% of Japanese dev interviews claim a game was "rushed").
