Really disappointed with the setting of this game. We are introduced to a very Star Trek-esque universe after the first hour and I was really excited. I expected it to be a space journey where you meet several different humanoid aliens and maybe solve some galactic problem but instead you spend the whole game on a medieval planet.
Do the other games in the series at least take advantage of the sci-fi aspects?

Unfortunately, no. This is quite possibly the shittiest game series that's still active today.

I had the same reaction after trying Till the End of Time. I wanted to check the others out, are they all really like this?

Star Ocean 2: you spend the first part of the game on a medieval planet. The second half takes place in a technologically advanced planet but it still doesn't feel particularly scifi.
Star Ocean 3: except for the last hours, game take place on a medieval planet.
Don't know about the other games in the series.

It's almost always being crash-landed on a fantasy planet with some sci-fi things here and there.
Star Ocean 2, you can choose to play as the undeveloped planet native, or the sci-fi space traveler crashing onto the planet. Later, the party gets teleported to another planet that's a lot more developed, giving you both an undeveloped, and sci-fi planet.
Star Ocean 3 has the main character crash land on a fantasy planet, but eventually return back to their ship and their world for a brief moment, then back to the fantasy planet, then onto a sci-fi world.
Star Ocean 4 is probably the closest to what you want, since it actually has different planets to travel to, including a very Trekian plotline that involves returning to Earth. Pic related is SO4's map select.
Star Ocean 5 starts the story with the undeveloped planet natives, who eventually meet some mysterious people that are obviously the sci-fi space travelers. You eventually get to go on one of their ships, but you'll end up returning back to the undeveloped planet again.
Star Ocean 6 brings back the option of choosing between playing as the sci-fi space traveler or the undeveloped planet native from SO2, and again, takes place mostly on the fantasy planet, but with a few trappings of sci-fi here and there, like the DUMA robot device that lets you fly around.

Think that's bad? One of the later games reveals that it's literally an mmo.

It's SNES RPG Maker shit, what did you expect? Play the PlayStation games instead, they're leagues better.

Addendum, Phantasy Star IV is the 16-bit space JRPG you're looking for.

game is great and you should kill yourself (i bet murrican fag because this game is better then his shitty favorite murrican game)
besides if you wanted to play something futuristic you had phantasy star back then (proof that players used games on either console instead of how they are in the western since most are console fags)

if you really want to play the "improved" games you use the psp remakes with undub patch and retranslated,if you really know you play the original.
the psone star ocean 2 is just meeh specially with the poor official translation, besides the only thing they have is 3D with 2D sprites but it got improved for the psp release.
(the grape juice of star became a meme in japan,it became so much of a meme that it was used on several anime)

star ocean the last hope makes you travel to the past.
for example the ship you see in the first star ocean is the ship in star ocean the last hope and the origin of all evil

I didn't say it was a bad game, in fact the writing is leagues better than any Tales garbage. it just feels like a bait and switch. Combat is also too easy and lacks combos like Tales games.

>star ocean the last hope makes you travel to the past.
Yeah, I was kinda trying to avoid spoiling that for the OP's sake, champ.
