I think she meant the ability to use magic. Contact with Lavos did explicitly enable humans to do that, which is why Spekkio can't teach it to Ayla. It's effectively a species-wide mutation which effectively is evolution but that doesn't mean they're not the same species.

I dont know why but Ayla is one of my least favorite Chrono Trigger party members. Her design is fine, I like her quirks like running on all fours, and combat wise she is really overpowered while also being the thief of the party. I think it's her character, she's just not very interesting, similar to Robo who is also overpowered in combat. I wonder if a male caveman would have been better. At least her people gave us the Brian Peppers theme.

Ayla's pro: she is the most well-adjusted member of the cast.
Every other character has personal baggage (except blank-slate Crono). Outside of that one time she hit Kino (which the little bitch deserved), of the whole cast, she is the very role model of the idealized young adult and underdog warrior. If you wrote Crono out of the game, she could be the main character that everyone looks up to.
Ayla's con: she barely has a reason to stick around.
Frog has this problem too. We can infer that they have a vested interest in Lavos after getting a taste of what it's capable of, but the game could've benefitted with an extra scene or two, plus you can take them to the End of Time as soon after they're permanently in the party and they don't bat an eye. Ayla is arguably worse because she barely understood the concept of time when you first meet her.

It seems more likely that Lavos manipulated the advancement of the northern pacifist blue haired tribe and helped them learn magic which became the sky magi in the dark ages while the rest of humanity was the earthbound people. Pretty sure its implied magic didn't exist until Lavos impaled itself into the planet and opened a wound into the world which unleashed its energy kinda like Mako in FF7 which is what magic it is, which would make thematic sense since the Enlightened were using magic for unnatural science and making life and attempting to live forever. When they were forced back down and interspersed with the rest of humanity, they likely carried their knowledge with them which humans as a whole benefited from, so in that sense Lavos may have sped up the development of the human race.

Going into slight headcanony territory, i always assumed Lavos end goal was to use the queen as a seed/larva and the black palace starship as a cocoon. She seems to become one with Lavos and shares its power. I could see the intent being that Lavos wounds worlds to feed on their energy as a parasite, manipulates the development or evolution of a worlds species to become advanced enough to build a space vessel, uses a suitable host body of said species to implant its DNA and power into, launch the ship with this host on it, over a millenia the host grows and mutates into a new Lavos body, shedding the outer ship like a cocoon and continues the process forever. Seems like a very 90s Square plot to do. Furthermore, the emergence in 1999 was the old body, having failed in its initial process of parasitic rebirth and maybe it even kickstarted the time gates in Crono's era in an attempt to manipulate history to fix its original plan.

It's not super clear but Trigger implies that it was people futzing around with Lavos during the Dark Ages that allowed them to learn magic, not Lavos just being present. They were drawing on Lavos's power to do all sorts of stuff and one side effect was they developed magical abilities themselves. That trait propagating through humanity over time is technically evolution but saying one is human and the other isn't doesn't make a whole lot of sense. If that were the case then we'd be dividing people into different species based on whether or not they're lactose intolerant.

Ayla is one of the strongest characters in the game though, and her dual techs with Chrono, Marle and Lucca all do crazy damage due to being both physical and elemental in nature (which is how you damage all the enemies with crazy high defense to either property like Spekkio's final form).
At max level she can also do 9999 dmg criticals on her normal attack.
I think her only problem is not having a good screen nuke attack nor any healing.

Story wise they had an extra dungeon planned in her era but it was cut, even though stuff like maps and music were completed.

Her 9999 crit comes from reaching level 96 when her weapon is upgraded to Bronze First, not from pushing her stats to **. Pushing all stats to ** is definitely New Game + material since it requires a lot of Tabs, but it's not especially hard to reach level 96.

I forgot what was the best grinding spot for exp though, I only remember that for AP I used the conveyer belt intro in the genocide dome of AD2300 because at least three characters can nuke everything in one attack (Crono, Magus, and Robo all have an all-screen electric attack that fries all the robots), you get attacked multiple times in succession, and you can just jump into the chute and land back at the start to start again and/or to save outside on the map... it's basically a perfect spot for grinding.

I'm pretty sure that entire subquest was thrown together last minute. We know that the Singing Mountain dungeon was probably after Magus's Castle and before Tyranno Lair because of it's placement on the official soundtrack. We also know that it was on the eastern side of the world map by a village that were both erased in the final game. And the old man at Laruba Village tells Ayla to talk to the keeper at the summit to get a Dactyl but no such person exists. The whole scenario comes across like you were probably supposed to awake from the fight with Magus in that Eastern village and get to Tyranno Lair through the Singing Mountain.

I'm assuming they scrapped Singing Mountain because whatever subplot they had in mind over in the east of the prehistoric era probably would have slowed the game down too much sandwiched between two major dungeons. They probably wanted to get you to the Lavos explanation quickly because once you realize Magus isn't responsible you kinda want to know what's up instead of farting around with something unrelated.
