Cool texture sets and themes is one way. There's first maps in every project and seeing some textures and getting an idea that just can't be expressed in stock textures probably plays a part. 2048 was castle themed, 512 had a lot of furnaces and industrial areas, unrattled's down-to-earth base textures lead to somewhat realistic UAC buildings, and on the other hand the doom 1 restriction lead to some limited roster combat puzzles in episode 2 from more experienced mappers

There's a few mods that have faster enemies. Not many have enemies that actively get incapped when blown back though.
Have you tried Project MSX? It's a faster paced gameplay mod with really aggressive enemies.

I included the same green stickman exit sign as on top of the secret door inside the secret crate, but it's not as visible as I thought. The sign is now as tall as the crate so it has more chance be seen before the crate sinks into the ground, and the secret stasi is now 45 degrees further from the 1 unit gap in the window
You were investigating something on the opposite side of the elevator switch. I thought it might be the coop teleporter I scrapped early on but it might also be the dummy sectors for the elevator? either way I hid the linedefs just in case they're somehow visible through the wall

The Crypt was pretty fun level, very compact, had nice detail, not too much to write home about the combat encounters except that it wasn't trying to overdo things. Good shit. I love levels like this that are reasonably short so getting through is not a massive chore without saving. That one bit where you had to find the ladder stumped me for a bit but good map. And it was nice to return to classic Doom after beating 2016(which was really good actually)

And another notion about Plutonia and maps in general :
Little detail can sometimes make a big difference in how I feel about a map, I like the little "wall embeds" to break up the monotony of the texture, then they do the "brick wall lights" for the corner but use steel beams to frame the part where the texture changes. Really nice, I really think the Plutonia team was making the most out of Doom 2 assets.

After recently playing through also Doom 2 I don't disagree. I do think that Doom 2 still, warts and all, is worth playing and I also don't get the obsessive ranking wars people engage in, instead of discussing the *why* (aka the design elements that make it so) but yeah, so far it seems that Plutonia is really hitting that spot for me that I really like about Doom and aligns with how I personally like to play.

Doom 2 had a lot of "miss" moments for me but it is because of those missteps is that the later comers would identify points where Id was kinda fumbling and would produce really good fan and official content.

Circle of Death is overrated; it plays like shit after you're done with the initial fight in the titular circle, especially on pistol start where you don't get anything beyond shotgun and chaingun until a late AV encounter that grants a plasma gun with 60 cells unless you find the secret cells. Basically a slog with chaingun vs. mid-tiers enemies.

The rising bridge with the spectres doesn't even let them walk on the bridge, and don't get me started with the ending where you have to climb two long elevators while nothing else happens, I guess Romero tried to make the map fit with the music in that section, fuck knows.

I've rarely seen people rave about it as well as be so upset by it. Also, pstarting Doom 2 felt way more strict with ammo than Plutonia did and leads to a neatly different sort of suffering.

Always thought the idea of a remake was pointless when Enhanced Edition already exists.
Even just talking about graphics, System Shock's level design doesn't really cope well with an enhanced level of detail. Slapping full PBR textures and dynamic lighting into Wolfenstein 3D's perfectly rectangular rooms and hallways would only be slightly more jarring.

There should be a Brutal Doom-specific settings menu that lets you lower the gore amount. All those blood sprites adding up is what really hits the performance (not for me though, my computer is a chad, but the framerate does dip briefly if I push my nose right up to a blood-spattered wall).

Given that the textures used a TEXTURES lump and not a TEXTUREx one, plus that the name of the texture used in the editor and the name of the lump does not correspond with each others, I would guess it's just a ZDoom vs Boom mapping tool issue that could be fixed with some modifications. The pic of Purgatori with a gun is bigger than the linedef it is plastered on for example.
The hard times won't stop for quite a bit, hence why I'm debating just waiting for the Gob map, fixing bugs and calling it done.

NTA, but to be quick : the doom engine can't rescale textures it applies on surfaces to be bigger or smaller than the surface it is on : a 512 units long wall needs a 512 px long texture, otherwise the textures will end up repeating/cut short. Also, Doom uses a TEXTURE1 (or 2) lump to get info on its textures, while fancy ZDoom wads can use a different TEXTURES lump. The textures used for Purgatori are using the ZDoom TEXTURES lump.

And I don't know why (because I never mapped for ZDoom), but the textures show up as IMAGE1 and IMAGE2 on my editor instead of their names.

Visual Studio isn't a compiler, it uses compilers dependent on the programming language and libraries being used, as well as the targeted platform. For example, Roslyn is a compiler for C# that VS uses.
If a project was made on a Mac or Linux OS, chances are you're not gonna find a VS solution or project file, since those platforms basically necessitate VS Code, which uses directory structures to manage projects.

Nah, sometimes what you see is what you get. As popular and easy it is to put all the blame on 3D Realms, the truth is that Nightdive Studios didn't do a particularly great job on managing project themselves. Taking on rising opportunity and prioritizing them over already announced in-development projects. Reason why SiN: Reloaded was pushed aside is because the company owns the game and entire IP, similarly to System Shock. Who knows how much that could've affected sequel's Enhanced Edition in spite of aforementioned priority, but at least you can consider that as a possibility.
Having full control of said franchises means that Nightdive has practically unlimited time with them. Meanwhile, something like Quake or Powerslave must meet the deadline.

since this is for nughud, initially i made it so that all the widgets you edit get put into a text box below (you can kinda see it at the end of the gif) according to nughud format. so really all youd have to do would be to save that text as a .lmp file and put it in your autoload folder (or maybe you'd have to put it in a .wad first)

Rise Of The Triad is like a cross between really early first person shooters (as in pre-Doom ones) and classic sidescrolling arcade style shooters.

Your base bullet weapons are infinite, while bigger weapons are kind of like powerups, you pick one up and that's the powered up weapon that you have, using it until its empty or you find another one (in which case a weapon with shots left is put down in its spot, and you can come back later to pick it up and use the ones which are still in that weapon). The weapons are mostly a half dozen different flavors of bazookas and then a couple of similarly explosive magic weapons. Two of the powerups give you a temporary "weapon" where one turns you into an invincible dog ("Dog Mode"), and another turns you into a very tall and invincible godlike being ("God Mode"), as a dog you can crawl underneath low passages and maul enemies in melee, while holding down attack you charge and release a powerful howl which makes all nearby mooks fucking explode, and as a god, you moan a lot and shoot magical spheres which disintegrates enemies. There's other powerups and powerdowns as well.
All in all, every level has a lot of ordnance.

Key to ROTT is that you move quickly, and the game plays really fast and loose with explosions. You have some tolerance for splash damage, aside from it not being that bad to be a little close when you blow a guy into smithereens, the Asbestos Armor is itchy and makes you temporarily immune to explosions, which can be used to explode yourself into a crowd of goons, or you can use a rocket to launch yourself waaay up into the fucking air, like Quake but a few years earlier. I mean you don't strictly need the itchy Asbestos Armor but it saves a good few points of HP if you have it. Explosions can also be used to heat up Monk Meal and Priest Porridge so that they heal you double, make sure to apply the splash damage to heat up as many as you can per rocket.

It's not a constant uphill trend, some people are good mappers, some are not, but we've definitely had some incredibly talented motherfuckers, and there's certain expectations and standards these days which irons out some of the flaws of early works like TNT, Memento Mori, and Hell Revealed.
Espi for instance was one of the very best mappers of the entire fandom, and he's still way up there, very few can match or come close to his talent still.

It's kind of a forced meme, but it's not entirely groundless. Switch to simple flashlight mode and something like incandescent. Because lights go through walls in this engine (lol, lmao even), more complex maps will grind to a halt due to the linedef count. It's illuminating the linedefs that fucks it up. Simple mode fixes that because it's 1 spotlight instead of 2 and it's not as wide. Meanwhile Incandescent makes it even shorter. Still going to experience FPS drops in some areas, but at least it'd be more playable. Unless you've already done all that in which case yeah may God help you.

Nugget was *almost* capable of supporting 16X, there's a screenshot of it running at 6816x3200 flying around. Though, if you were using the 21:9 widescreen mode, resulting in a 8920x3200 resolution, it would simply not render anything. DSDA seems to have the same limit, but it just crashes instead of yielding a black screen while still running the game logic.

Multiplayer stuff hasn't really changed much I think, though FTE can be recommended as an 'advanced' Quakeworld port.
For singleplayer, Ironwail is probably going to be the go-to for the foreseeable future, with vkQuake being a good fallback for anyone that has bugs or performance issues with Ironwail. FTE is the ideal engine for co-op and advanced graphics mods, but is prone to mod compatibility issues that may or may not be solvable with its extensive (and confusing) settings. DarkPlaces is only really relevant as the engine that the Quake 1.5 mod requires, being otherwise surpassed by FTE in every way. I guess Quakespasm can still be recommended for toaster players trying older map/mod releases.

Last time I've checked, FTE could run Quake 1.5.
But honestly, FTE kinda sucks as a source port. It's confusing to set up right and despite Hexen 2, Quake 2 and Quake 3 support, it's complete shit for all of them.

Yeah, turning problem geometry into func_walls usually fixes things well enough. I tried sealing your map both with a giant box and the proper way, fixing everything in the issues box at the bottom, and making the glass a func_detail_fence. None of those worked, but just deleting the fish somehow did.
