Pre-PS2 JRPGs that aren't just baby-difficulty "Attack-Attack-Heal" loops? PsS1 preferred, but any will work

All you're going to get aside from that is gimmick shit like "now try to figure out what kind of magic to use while dying, the repeat it when you figure it out" or "yeah figure out how to damage the right body part of the enemy in the correct order"

Seriously speaking, you aren't gonna find much unless you're willing to go tactical, and even then, there's not that much
JRPGs really hit their golden age on the PS2 imo

Wait what? That is when I stopped playing new JRPGs. The only PS2 RPGs I tried were Final Fantasy and Dragon Quest which I didn't like as much as the older ones and Persona where I didn't like the simulation elements. Did I just pick some bad ones?

I should clarify
PS2 was the peak in terms of GAMEPLAY, since devs could basically do whatever they wanted without being held too much back from system limitations
The ones I recomm3nd:
>Suikoden V
>Front Mission 5
>Dark Cloud 1 and 2
>Shadow Hearts 1 and 2
>Breath of Fire 5: Dragon's Quarter
>SMT Digital Devil Saga duology
>Romancing SaGa Minstrel Song
>Grandia 3/Xtreme
