Here is the latest demo of my Super Mario World hack, Super Mario Arbitrium:

https://files.catbox.moe/tpdvqj.zip

It features traditional level design (no kaizo) with an emphasis on multiple paths and secrets to find. Also includes many new graphics, enemies, gimmicks, and powerups. I hope you anons enjoy!

Holy shit, this was absolutely amazing. The ASM work, level design, creativity and polish are off the charts; I can't believe this is SMB1. It's been a oood while since a romhack absolutely blew my fuckin socks off, and damn it felt good. It is indeed Kaizo hard, but not in a bullshit way, and it's very generous and smart with restart placement.

You know... as a tripfag, you can filter me and ignore me completely if you want...

I really cared about the projects and OCs because I'm mentally lonely as fuck and this is the first time I feel happy contributing /v/orld 3 and other childhood issues.
I take the blame about the stupid character decisions that nearly caused a war between this and /s4s/, and I'm taking the blame for
associating /trash/ and /s4s/ thread just because I wanted that project to be as memorable as 4chan City and /v/ vs. /b/ comic.
Compare to other anons who collaborated /v/orld game, I'm one of them who geniuinely cared more than enough to spend so much time designing over 24 characters.
I was trying my best to look for good and look for best intentions for the project that would touch anon's heart that could make many anons smile. But I will not take
the blame for any unnecessary censorship about "UR A FAG" and removal of "IDOL APPROVES" and inferior ideas about catering to Twitch and Youtube.
I just wanted to help with projects so I can learn, and maybe I can help others learn which would've provide immense positive revolution to /vr/ in terms of hacking, coding, and other programming situations that would've bring high-spiritual positive vibes to anons like you. Your responses has zero constructive critisicms other than pure hatred against me just because I want to help.

To avoid more retardation issues, I got, all I will say is this: many would've tell off about /vr/ and 4chan and such like YandereDev, but all I can say to you two is "Thank you for your honest emotions against me" and "I forgive you."
That is all I can say.

as someone who made levels for two of the 3 /v/orld games i'm certain that there wont be a new hack.
the planning phase is the best part, and after that you have to hope that OP gives a shit and finishes the hack for us unlike what happened last time with /v/orld 3 where there was rapid progress until OP went AWOL and occasionally replied to emails and nothing else. the fact that v1.1 still hasn't come out yet scares me away if know the true complete version is in limbo with no response of the organizer.
another reason i like to believe why progress went so well was because of the pandemic and anons lurking /v/ who otherwise wouldn't do so. good luck finding ASM anons now that everyone is back to work.

Could the SNES even handle that effect? The one game using it, Castlevania 4, ran like shit the whole time during that effect. Plus the Master System CPU is slightly faster, 3.58 mhz versus the SNES 2.68 mhz.

Once again, that's not the SNES "handling the effect". That's an on-cartridge expansion. So, it sounds like the SNES could not handle that effect after all.

>> No.10072668

>>10072595
FastROM is literally not an expansion chip. It's a ROM mode that allows the SNES CPU to run at its full 3.58 MHz, which many publishers didn't buy because it was more expensive than the 2.68 MHz SlowROM cartridges. I know you're that anon who acts like the SNES raped and murdered your family, so you should get your information right.
>So, it sounds like the SNES could not handle that effect after all.
There are examples posted in this thread, from actual games instead of tech demos, but of course, they somehow don't count.

Can the SNES run in "fast ROM" without a special cartridge?

I still need to do some of those deathless challenge runs. I also need to go back and get the last Super Moon in the third area where you're running away from the clones. I keep wondering if there's a way to upgrade the stamina meter seeing as there's extra blank pips there on the HUD. I only found out about Mario Gaiden recently but I'm pretty stoked for whenever the fuck it comes out too.

>> No.10072692

>>10072678
With that logic the SlowROM is a special cartridge too.
So I guess every single SNES game on the market uses a special cartridge that isn't stock.

>> No.10072707

>>10072692
If that is the argument you want to make, then that is indeed pretty pathetic for the SNES. I suppose that might explain why nobody wants to make SNES homebrews, when better and faster 16-bit hardwares that don't require specialised cartridges exist, which can run solely from a simple ROM chip and nothing more.

>> No.10072730

>>10072678
3.58 MHz is stock, since it's the true speed of the processor. SlowROM carts exist because Nintendo wanted more games on the system and offered a cheaper option for publishers. Nowadays this is irrelevant, since everyone codes their homebrew to use FastROM speeds and there's no worries about having to save 50 cents per cart.

Here are some updates for Castlevania 3 hack im working on, thanks to the massive bank registry granted by the US versions MMC5 chip we have tons of room for a whole lot more unique effects. >it's the true speed of the processor
The true speed of the processor is 2.68 mhz. Fast ROM cartridges allow it to overclock, which is why it is not stock. The "homebrews" on SNES, really they're just Mario World ROM hacks, they use the SA-1, which is a similar overclock but for 10 mhz. It is also not stock. The only stock speed of the processor is 2.68 mhz, or 1.79 mhz if the controller is polling inputs.

>> No.10073172

>The only stock speed of the processor is 2.68 mhz
>or 1.79 mhz if the controller is polling inputs.
That's two. Why randomly exclude the third clock speed, the one that it operates at internally? It's stock. Also SA-1 has its own processor and a bunch of other features, so calling it a "similar overclock" is retarded.

its fairly common people without programming experience to want to jump on a project with the idea that they have a lot of time and will eventually be a big contributor all they need is help.
The thing is basically that "help" is like a 3 year tutoring process so the person who is helping you is doing the majority of the lifting and the project would probably be done sooner if they just didn't help you and did it all themselves.

While it's stupid to argue that FastROM vs SlowROM is some kind of hardware expansion (it's not), I'd just like to note it is kind of silly that the SNES's clock speed is linked to the speed of the ROM chips used. As far as I'm aware neither the Genesis or PC-Engine have that issue. Why is that a thing on the SNES to begin with? Is it some kind of carry over from the NES or something?

>> No.10091675

>>10091657
It's not particularly odd. Slower ROMs were cheaper and devs took advantage of that if they wanted to.
The GBA had a similar feature, but all retail cartridges used the faster configuration.

>> No.10091698

>>10091675
I know cost is the reason for different ROM types being used, but what I'm getting at is why was the system clock speed linked to that? As far as I'm aware Genesis and PC-Engine games typically used the slower 200ns ROM types (or even slower possibly?) and those systems didn't have an issue that required the system to be clocked slower for them. So why does the SNES need to be clocked slower to use that kind of ROM?

>> No.10091719

>>10091698
It doesn't affect the system clock, which is always 21.477MHz. A memory access from the CPU might take multiple master cycles depending on which memory domain is accessed. The commonly reported 2.68 MHz is the effective speed when 8 master cycles are needed, rather than 6 for 3.58 MHz

>> No.10091759

>>10091657
SNES was designed to use two ROM speeds, the SlowROM and FastROM setups. The idea was the SlowROM chips would be perfect for games that don't need the full speed, so the games could be made cheaper. Not every NES game needed the MMC1 or MMC3, they figured not every SNES game would need full power. At least, that was the plan. It was soon clear that the SlowROM chips were crappy and prone to slowdown, but it was still cheaper and gamers were still buying the SlowROM games. So even major devs used SlowROM on their AAA titles, and gamers got used to the idea that busy screen equals slowdown. At least until the FastROM chips got cheaper. Early US titles like Gradius 3, Actraiser, and Castlevania 4 all used SlowROM. But by 1993 even stuff like The Lost Vikings were using FastROM chips, and SlowROM had been banished to games that really didn't need FastROM like Where in Time is Carmen Sandiego.

>> No.10091787

Hello, I am a retard. Are FastROM and SlowROM just different types of ROMs that the game data is stored on, or are they a separate chip altogether like.. Super FX or something?
