just installed this on proper hardware and got sims 1 working, what other retro games should I install? I honestly forgot what games I use to play on PC back in the day.

Discworld Noir

Croc (because we need another fucking thread on that toothy bastard)
X Wing Alliance (though the mods that bring it up to present day spec are fantastic)

I think all the OG army men games ran on XP. I believe I used a vm to play them before the GoG released. I'd give them all a try.

>Army Men
Difficult. All about controlling the hero, Sarge and maneuvering him through challenging scenarios. Not much of a campaign storyline, but rather a few missions that fit a theme.

>Army Men 2
Starts to hit its stride. Incorporates the ability to also control other soldiers alongside Sarge. A long and interesting campaign involving stopping the Tans from launching a nuclear weapon at the Greens. You can keep every single soldier you find alive 'til the end of the game. Still an immensely difficult game require good use of all resources you find while exploring the maps. Fantastic soundtrack.

Army Men: Toys in Space
If you wanted more, this sort of does it. Some people found it to be questionable, but as a kid it felt like more of the same with an interesting twist. Perhaps a bit more difficult than 2. A pretty good soundtrack.

Army Men: Air Tactics
An Interesting take on isometric air combat. Ferry soldiers around, pick up and move objects to interact with the world and puzzles. A lot more fun than it had any right being. I believe it ended on somewhat of a cliffhanger and they never made another Air Tactics game. A legit hidden gem among the Army Men games, tough to get running.

Windows 98 would give you compatibility with MS-DOS titles, reconsider dual booting Win 98 and XP
Just use pcgamingwiki.com to check OS compatibility if you really need. I think that dual booting is ideal for having newer DirectX9 video games

If some old game runs too fast you can use Throttle to slow down your PC (it has a MS-DOS version too)
oldskool.org/pc/throttle/

Adding to getting yourself a Sound Blaster for EAX games. Check which ones are the easy to use models, some SB cards didn't have EAX.

Am I? All I know is that it works great and That I’m having fun playing games. Plus, LGA 775 is not that overkill for xp, especially when playing the aforementioned FEAR where a pentium 4 struggles at higher settings. The GTX 970 is overkill for xp, though, but it’s what I had lying around and it’s fully compatible.

>> No.10087831

>>10086612
FEAR is a good one and really any game with EAX support if you have a sound blaster. Crysis also has EAX support and even better performance on xp, but you lose out on DX10 features.

>> No.10087938

>>10087002
Is that a Creative sound card? Is so what model and did you run into any problems playing older EAX supported games?
I'm considering rebuilding my LGA775 dual P4 build for XP gaming and trying to dual boot it with 98. My P4 1.8 Ghz falls short for some games, like Medal of Honor Allied Assault on max settings Or, maybe it's just the gpu.

>> No.10087967

Yea it’s an Sb-0880 X-fi Titanium PCI-E. It works great with everything I’ve tested so far, but it’s mostly been newer EAX titles, admittedly.

>> No.10087971

why would you do this instead of just spinning up a vm? I'm making an XP box for my Uncle, but he's in his 70s, wants to play his old plane games, and is computer retarded. what's your excuse?

>> No.10087998

>>10087971
Because we have the parts already anyways and some of the games work best only on xp with original hardware, which you probably know already if you’re building a PC for someone. I mean, you already answered the question with your Uncle’s own use case. More fun to have a working system rather than a pile of old parts.

What a terrible attitude from someone quite literally doing the same thing for the same reasons. You don’t have fun building systems at all? What an unbelievable arrogance. Of course, we can use a VM, it’s even easier than building a system. I struggle to imagine how another retro hardware enthusiast can make the position that others are retards when he’s doing the same thing for the same reason.
