For what is worth, this is the proper Sonic game for the Saturn, it was made specifically for it, and even though is technically as spinoff because is a racing game, racing games like Daytona are still considered killer apps.

I wish more racing games:
- weren't limited to cars and other vehicles and instead featured characters with special skills
- incorporated exploration and collection elements

Memes aside this game has a very underrated format. Can you recommend other games that do this?

There's Bomberman Fantasy Race, Running Wild and Micro Maniacs for the PS1, but they foxu more on the non-vehicle racing than exploration proper.

No idea, I googled it.

Trying to search for it again, it's from one of those "Play retro games online" type sites that embeds an emulator into a webpage and has a bunch of pirated roms. There is no music (whether they cut out all the music tracks to save disk space or were just too incompetent to properly set it up properly I have no idea) but it runs like absolute garbage both performance-wise and in how laughably broken the emulation is. That screenshot is apparently cherry-picked as one of the LEAST glitchy moments.

Is there any reason not to use tails in this game? He seems to clean house on basically every stage with his hover.

Why play the Saturn version when the PC port has more features?

Without using fan-installers and fan-mods a lot of the features slowly started getting stripped out due to lack of support on newer APIs/Hardware long before said fan-mods existed but still well before the game would not even natively run anymore at all on a modern OS.

Had the game for the Saturn. Completed it in an hour. Unlocked everything in a day. Fun game, but clearly rushed to meet a deadline. Would go into the game options and just use the instrumental tracks.

What the hell was the dev's problem that they felt the need to troll the player like this?

I appreciate that each character is truly unique with their own gimmicks but I wish there was not as much balance disparity. There's no reason Amy, Eggman and Tails doll had to suck so much harder than the rest

Hanna Barbera Turbo Toons for SNES. Single screen racer like Super Sprint or Ivan "Ironman" Stewart's Super Off Road Racing, but all the characters are on foot.

Never played it myself, but I remember seeing this on store shelves all the time.

the problem with shortcuts is that there's no reason not to take them so big portions of the level go to waste being skipped and the race ends too soon. for shortcuts to work they should be much more high risk(think the ramp to the runnel in koopa troopa beach of mario kart 64)

Love this game, it's really short but each track is really fun to replay each time and there are different modes like tag and balloons as a bonus. I miss when Sonic games were like this, being about well designed stages, good controls and just having fun with details and tracks.

Team losi racer / Buggy has you unlock new cars through puzzles, you need to use certain powerups to reach the area the car is at.

They really are, I've played many kart racers and when you use the drift buttons, R is one of the most fun to control. I like using Tails Doll in particular since he floats on water which opens up cool shortcuts

Its still sad that SEGA never built on this formula. I know Sonic and SEGA All Stars Racing Transformed has its cult following, but I still miss what R had. More courses would've made for a great time.
