10079551 No.10079551 [Reply] [Original]

For over a year now, I've been working on a list of various secrets in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Back in October, we had a great thread (>>9328653) where many /vr/ users contributed secrets of their own. I've added many of these secrets to my list, and now it's time that we find even more. Post anything you can think of, and I'll add it.

I'll start by sharing the list so far, but first, a quick note: this list does not include anything related to heart piece locations, skulltulas, upgrades, hidden grottos or anything else which is already well-documented online. This is a list of true oddities and obscurities that the average player may never notice on a given playthrough. With that said, even some of the most well-known "secrets" have been included for the sake of posterity.

Now, without further adieu, here are some of the many secrets in The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time...

>If you walk slowly by a butterfly while holding a deku stick, it may turn into a fairy. Not all butterflies will do this.
>Play Song of Storms near an immature bean plant. It will pop up from the dirt and shoot out a bunch of fairies.
>Occasionally, Navi may turn green and hover over a small spot on the ground. This sometimes indicates that you can play a song in that spot to make a Big Fairy appear. The Big Fairy has no wings and looks like a large orb of bright pink light. Unlike a normal fairy which only restores health, the Big Fairy restores both health and magic power, but it cannot be kept in a bottle.
>Play Song of Storms next to a Gossip Stone and a fairy will apear. Play Zelda's Lullaby instead, and it will produce a Big Fairy.
>Baby Dodongos are attracted to bombs like bait.
>Baby Dodongos will explode upon death; this explosion can destroy brown destructible walls just like a bomb.
>Blue Fire will also destroy brown destructible walls.

continued...

>> No.10079553

>>10079551
>The Megaton Hammer will instantly kill any nearby Baby Dodongo when used; it will also uproot deku scrubs and deku merchants, and can flip tektites onto their backs.
>There is a dying soldier in the back alley of Hyrule Market right after Zelda escapes with Impa. If you speak to him, he will tell you that Ganondorf's forces attacked the king. At the end of the conversation, Navi notes that he has stopped moving.
>If a signpost has been destroyed, play Zelda's Lullaby near it, and it will be restored.
>Go into the Kokiri Forest item shop. To the right of the merchant is what looks like a dark hallway. Walk into this area and you'll find a hidden blue rupee. Once taken, this rupee will never spawn again.
>Wearing different masks will change what people say to you and make some enemies ignore you. The Bunny Hood will also prevent Stalchildren from spawning at night in Hyrule Field.
>Walking on the light brown paths running through Hyrule Field will also plevent Stalchildren from spawning at night.
>Killing many enemies with a Light Arrow will produce a big purple rupee.
>Go into the Shooting Gallery as adult or child, then change the camera view to first person. Look at the wall opposite the clerk. There are three odd, black pictures of demons which don't appear anywhere else in the game.
>There is a pool of hidden red rupees under the waterfall where you enter Zora's Domain. Equip the Iron Boots and jump down from where you play Zelda's Lullaby
>Most trees will only drop green rupees or hearts if you roll into them, but some trees will also drop other items such as arrows, bombs and deku nuts.
>In the garden where you first meet Zelda, there are two windows. In one window, you can see portraits of Mario and other Nintendo characters. If you shoot this window, a red rupee will pop out. If you shoot the opposite window, a guard will warn you not to cause trouble and throw a bomb at you.

>> No.10079554

>>10079551
>The Red Tunic will make your more resistant to fire damage, as well as other damage such as spiked floors.
>Inside the Gerudo Fortress, there is a pot of red soup in one of the rooms. Jump in it and you'll receive a red rupee. The Red Tunic will reduce the damage caused by the hot soup.
>In the Gerudo Fortress, there are several signs and decorations which will produce rupees when you shoot them, such as the wooden crescent moon sign you see when first entering the Gerudo's Fortress area from Gerudo Valley, and many of the bovine skull ornaments littered throughout the fortress.
>When you first get captured at Gerudo Fortress, there are two interesting things you can do. First, Hookshot up onto the wooden platform above the prison. If you already have the Longshot, look to the far left -- there is a treasure chest which you can shoot to reach the top of the compound without going through the lower levels. You can also jump down from this platform onto the second story roof, which leads you to a secret area that cannot normally be accessed from any other part of the fortress. Make your way through the guards in this area and bear left. You'll come to a hallway with a landing above that requires the Hookshot to reach. Hookshot up and make your way through the doorway at the end. You'll find yourself on a balcony overlooking the entire fortress. Here, you'll find a wooden box. Break the box and it will reveal a big purple rupee. Much like the kokiri shop blue rupee, this rupee will never appear again after being taken.
>Outside of the Spirit Temple, there are trees with nuts on them. Shoot the nuts with your bow and a random item will pop out.
>Killing a Skull Kid will yield a gigantic orange rupee.

>> No.10079561

>>10079551
>At the Fishing Hole during the past, you can cast your fishing rod at the owner and grab his hat. This will make him very angry, and he will add a new rule to the Fishing Hole's signpost. Additionally, you can opt to either return the hat to him, refuse to give it to him, or keep it hooked to the rod and cast it at the water. If you do so, it will fall into the water and the owner will make you pay for it.
>In the past, you can walk up the chains of the Hyrule Castle Town drawbridge at night time. Go to the top and walk accross the stone block at the top. You'll find hidden red rupees.
>Some enemies respawn after being killed, such as Stalchildren, Guays and Leevers. If you kill enough of these enemies, larger versions will begin to spawn which will more rupees when killed. Stalchildren will get bigger every time, with an unlimited cap to their size, and will at first yield one blue rupee, then three red rupees. Leevers will eventually spawn a large purple version.
>Ice Arrows deal more damage than any other arrow type.
>Ice Arrows have a unique effect on the Shadow Temple boss, Bongo Bongo. Shoot one of Bongo's hands and it will be frozen, forcing Bongo to try and break the ice with his other. This is especially interesting because this unique animation can only be seen if you acquire the Ice Arrows before going to the Shadow Temple -- except, you need the Silver Gauntlets from the Spirit Temple to even get the Ice Arrows from the Gerudo Training Ground. This seems to indicate that the developers anticipated players might try and beat Spirit Temple before Shadow Temple, despite Navi telling you to go to the Shadow Temple first.
>The nipples of the giant statue within Spirit Temple are Hookshot targets. If you touch the very tip of the nipples when hookshotting to them, you will be damaged.

>> No.10079563

>Deku Nuts will stun Ganon during the final battle -- but unlike regular enemies, he will not turn blue and become immobile. Instead, he will simply stop and shake his head for a moment.
>If you have an empty bottle, you can play Epona's Song for a cow to receive Milk.
>Go to Lon Lon Ranch after freeing Epona, and Malon will challenge you to clear hurdles. Beat the record time and a cow will be delivered to Link's house.
>As adult Link, return to your house in Kokiri Forest and save. The next time you load the game, Link will spawn here, rather than the Temple of Time.
>Go into the shooting gallery in the past or future and start playing. Don't move for the entire duration of the game. The owner will become upset and look away from you until you leave.
>Phantom Ganon has a very rare attack where he will charge himself up with energy and rush at you. This special attack is so rare that you may fight him dozens of times and never see it used.
>If you walk up to the gargoyle statue suspended over the first gate leading into the Hyrule Castle grounds, you can interact with it and it will tell you the time. Additionally, the guard beneath the gate will let you pay 10 rupees to open the gate if you keep pestering him.
>Farore's Wind will not only let you warp between rooms within a dungeon, it will let you warp between different dungeons entirely. Simply create a warp point in one dungeon and then go to any other dungeon with a dungeon map inside of it. Use Farore's Wind again, and you'll be returned to the dungeon where you created the warp point.

>Epona will kill small enemies like Tektites when running over them. Epona will also destroy the leaves of mature bean plants (but don't worry, the plants will regrow).
>The bean plant in future Lost Woods may have no immediate purpose at first glance, as it doesn't grant access to any items or hidden areas. However, it can be used to easily reach the bridge leading from Kokiri Forest into Hyrule Field, which is especially valuable during the Biggoron Sword trading sequence where Link must deliver ingredients within a short time frame. This would appear to be its main and only function.
>Shops sell some items which may initially seem unnecessary, such as the Blue Fire at the Medicine Shop. However, there are often hidden uses for such items. For example, if you purchase the Blue Fire from the Medicine Shop before heading through Zora's Domain and into the Ice Cavern, you will be able to unfreeze King Zora or the Zora Shop entrance without having to go to the Ice Cavern first. Additionally, bringing Blue Fire to the Ice Cavern will allow you to access an optional room containing various items and more Blue Fire which can be found at the beggining of the dungeon; negating the need to first collect the fire from further into the dungeon and backtrack.
>The beggar will purchase Bugs for 50 rupees, Fish for 100 rupees and Blue Fire for 150 rupees. He will not buy any healing items such as potions or fairies, however.
>The fairies which accompany the Kokiri children will randomly change color every time the game is loaded, or when leaving and re-entering the forest.

>> No.10079571

>>10079551
>If you leave Dodongo's Cavern with the Bombs without completing the dungeon, and subsequently beat Jabu Jabu's Belly before beating Dodongo, the text displayed after acquiring the Zora's Sapphire will reflect that you still need one spiritual stone -- whereas normally, it would tell you to go directly to the temple of time. This indicates that the developers may have anticipated people beating Jabu before Dodongo's, further backed up by the map screen indicating that you should go to both Dodongo's and Jabu Jabu's at the same time.
>Ice arrows can freeze blade traps.
>There is an empty pond outside of the Spirit Temple. Play the Song of Storms on the rock overlooking the pond, and it will fill with water and produce many fairies.
>The guards in Gerudo Fortress have reduced vision during nighttime.
>There is a small pinboard on the wall in Link's house which records various minigames scores and times.
>Deku Nuts will cause any placed Bombchus to explode
>There is a hidden room with deku merchants and fairies underneath the bridge inside Ganon's Tower
>Dark Link will always have the same number of hearts as you do. If you do a 3 heart run, you can kill him with 3 hits from Din's Fire.
>The Hylian Shield can reflect projectiles, but the Mirror Shield cannot.

>> No.10079574

>>10079551
>You can cause a Dead Hand to surface by using the Lens of Truth to see where they are and throwing a bomb at the spot they're under.
>Readeads and Gibdos won't attack you if you walk by them slowly.
>If you have less than one heart, almost anything in the game can spawn a fairy when destroyed.
>When you play the Song of Time to make a Time Block appear, the block literally travels through time, and will be removed from the past/future and placed into the current time. This can be witnessed in a small lava-filled passage in Goron City, where playing the Song of Time as an adult will make Time Blocks from the past move to the future (that is, they'll be removed from the past entirely).
>Link has a few rare animations. For example, in some environments like the royal family tomb, if left alone he will occasionally sneeze.
>After freeing the carpenters in the Gerudo Fortress, you'll be met by a Gerudo warrior. Her clothes will match the color of the tunic you're wearing.
>Playing Song of Storms will temporarily prevent the Lens of Truth from consuming magic power
>The ReDeads in Castle Town Market will always walk towards another defeated ReDead. If allowed to approach the corpse, they will kneel down next to it.
>The amount of time Link can breathe underwater or withstand extreme heat is dependent upon his number of available hearts.

>> No.10079581

>Freezards and Anubis are weak to Fire Arrows.
>Saria no longer has her fairy during the adult timeline
>If you gave the Bunny Hood to the Running Man, he’ll be wearing it during the end credits and running in circles at his top speed during the celebration at Lon Lon, instead of running slowly as he normally would.
>There is great evidence to suggest that many of Hyrule's inhabitants are the result of Hylian men mixing with Gerudo women. In addition to a Gossip Stone that says Gerudo women travel to Market to find boyfriends, Talon will say that the Gerudo Mask reminds him of his wife if you wear it and speak to him. It should be no surprise then, that his daughter Malon has red hair like a Gerudo. If you speak to the two laughing men in the Market while wearing the Gerudo mask, one will say mistake you for his mother. These fellows also have red hair. This would also explain why the Gerudo Fortress is populated entirely by women but they are still able to reproduce.
>Some things in the game are not only affected by whether it is day or night, but the specific time of day. For example, Dampe's grave digging tour runs from exactly 18:00 to 21:00. Additionally, some NPCs won't come out until later in the morning, even if some "day time" things like shops or houses are already open. You can witness this mostly easily by entering Kakariko Village as soon as the morning chicken crows. If you enter an area early enough in the morning, no music will play.
>After beating the game and reaching the "The End" screen with Link and Zelda, wait a little while. Your version of the Scarecrow's Song will play, occasionally with different pitch and/or sound effects.

That's all, folks. I hope you enjoyed. If you have any secrets of your own, don't forget to share.

Some of this info is available online but not the vast majority of it. If you can find a site that has information about stuff like the trees outside spirit temple, the time-telling gargoyle or things like that, feel free to show me, because I've found very little in my time researching. Moreover, what I have found is often very fragmented, with one site having a handful of secrets and another site having a handful of others. There is no large compendium with all of the information in one place, which is what I've created here.

Most of these secrets are fairly obscure, and you have to do specific things in specific places. I love playing OoT as a sandbox game and just exploring the world, but there are still a lot of things I never discovered. The problem with the dying guard is that you have one chance of finding him, after that Ganondorf scene he disappears for good.

I love this game so much, man. Right now I'm trying to beat the game with the fewest items possible and no glitches. So far I've managed to avoid the deku nuts, hylian shield, biggoron sword, 3 bottles, all heart pieces, all capacity upgrades, both bigger wallets, magic beans, all of the spells and arrows except din's and the lens of truth (used my 100% profile to memorize the path through haunted wasteland, kek). Also gonna try to do without the goron tunic if possible. Thought it was gonna be harder to avoid some stuff like Bombchus, but I figured out how to blow up that boulder in Spirt Temple with regular bombs so I'm gonna at least put them off until Ganon's Tower. Route wise I did Forest, then Water, now I'm finishing up Spirit Temple and I'm gonna do Fire last before Shadow. Skipping Bottom of the Well entirely. It's been a ton of fun and is so much more difficult than playing for completion. 25 years on, I'm still finding new ways to enjoy this game.

A Gerudo male is only born once every 100 years; a male can be born of a Gerudo, but won't possess all traits required to actually be a Gerudo. One could surmise that this likely includes skin tone, facial phenotype features, and height. Considering TLOZ is quasi-anime in inspiration, it could be guessed that Gerudo women tend to pass down red hair, but red hair isn't an exclusively Gerudo trait in the first place, pe Groose (who is literally the only named one I can think of)

Yes, I remember you from the other thread. I am the uber challenge fag that reply to you.

I am currently playing OoT + MM Randomizer on original Hardware and also it has been fun.

In one of the uber challenges, I avoided deku nuts too, it was hard but possible. For avoiding the goron tunic, you wil require either a second bottle or 5 hearts, that's how I did it before. Or you can get the goron tunic and then get it stolen after completing the fire temple or I believe you can race the running man and the clock will be imposed instead of the clock before getting burned.

That was on /v/ right? Small world.
> For avoiding the goron tunic, you wil require either a second bottle or 5 hearts, that's how I did it before.
I was thinking about how you said that. I'm wondering, is the only issue Volvagia because of how long he takes to beat? If so, I wonder if it would be possible to kill him by getting the giant's knife and avoid the extra bottles/hearts. I mean yeah it'd still be an extra item but at least it would be a worthless broken blade instead of 2 hearts or a bottle (which is basically the best item in the game). I guess I could just use the tunic and ditch it yeah, but that feels kinda dirty. Then again I guess if you can lose it, it isn't technically a "permanent" item so maybe it should count in the first place?

>> No.10086978

Uberfag here.

I actually started to do the challenge myself. I will grab the tunic since it is not permament. Kinda like the deku shiele, you need it at first but then you can get rid of it.

I am currently going to zora domain and I haven’t picked deku nuts. I almodt died with the lizalfos in dodongo cavernd.

>I am currently going to zora domain and I haven’t picked deku nuts. I almodt died with the lizalfos in dodongo cavernd.
Yeah I'm not even trying for 0 deaths, I've already died like 10 times kek. Also I will prolly do what you're doing and just ditch the tunics. We should make up rules for a minimalist run cuz there are some grey areas to what's allowed. Maybe any item that you can get rid of should be considered a resource just like ammo/magic/rupees and you can choose to get it or not. IMO the only thing that matters is having the least amount of items/upgrades in your inventory when you beat the game and anything else goes.

>> No.10088105

>>10087885
not him but i'd say for a minimalist run:
- no upgrades of any kind (heart pieces, skulltulla stuff, quivers, bomb bags etc)
- no optional songs
- no biggoron sword, no hylian shield
- no masks/trading sequence items
- no blue potion
- no extra bottles
- no epona
- no fire arrows, ice arrows, farore or nayru
- no deku nuts
and yeah any item that's "needed" to beat the game like deku shield and tunics but can be lost, just use them naturally until you have a chance to get rid of them. basically just don't touch anything that you don't have to touch to get to ganon's tower. though id argue rupee chests etc., are okay since they just provide resources for items you already have and don't give you anything permanent. that's what you want, that rainbow bridge profile with the fewest items and abilities possible

I think you cannot get blue potion without giving the mushroom to the old lady.

I was reading online and unless you are making a TAS, is near imposible to beat volgagia without a goron tunic, you need around 2 minutes to beat it.

I did the minimal run around 15 years ago, I don't quite remember how I did it, I think I got 2 extra hearts and 2 bottles just to skip the Goron Tunic that unless you make glitches, you cannot avoid it.

Zora Tunic could be bypassed, at most you need 45 seconds underwater, and with 3 hearts and 1 fairy you can have 48 seconds and you will not need to revive King Zora. I still don't know if I will try that or not, but Goron Tunic is necessary.

For Ganon's tower, on the spirit section, I read you can use a backflip to get on top of the bombchu chest and then run to the gap and you will be able to climb it.

For the spirit temple on the child section, the rock you need to blow up, you can do it with bombs, I did it on one of my randomzer runs, it isn't hard at all.

If you buy the Zora Tunic before unfreezing King Zora, he will offer to give you a big kiss instead of giving you the tunic.

The Kakariko theme changes dpeneidng on whether Link is an adult or child.

Din's Fire will cause morpha's tentacles to instantly evaporate.

There is a small cave hidden behind a lava fall in Dodongo's Cavern. It contains a single heart.

There is a secret area in Fire Temple. Go to the big lava room with all the moving platforms. Normally, if you stand on these platforms they will rumble and descend into the lava. However, in the northwest corner of this room there is a single platform which will instead levitate and bring you to a hidden cave at the top of the room. The cave contains a few pots with basic items like arrows.

In Kakariko, there is a hidden area inside of the windmill. Look up and you'll see a small opening with what looks like a small wooden peg sticking up. Longshot this peg, and you'll be taken to a small staircase inside the windmill. The only thing here is a single cucco: the only cucco left in the entire adult timeline.

You can usually get rupees from floating along a water source for long enough. You can do this in the moats outside Hyrule Market and Hyrule Castle, as well as Zora's River. Typically, the longer you float, you'll keep getting rupees of greater and greater value, up to red rupees.

I remember my first attempt at sequence breaking a game was this. Maybe like the 2nd or 3rd time replaying OoT I got the bomb bag in Dodongo's Cavern and just had the thought "wait, nothing's stopping me from just going to jabu jabu right now?" so I left and did it first before finishing the dungeon. I remember being disappointed to find that it does actually check for all 3 stones when you try to go to the temple of time.

last time i 100%'d the game it took me like 40 hours, but run has been like 8. the pacing is brisk. also if you do decide to do it, here are some suggestions. obviously you don't have to follow my "rules" unless you want to, but if you want to beat it with the fewest items possible (and no glitches), keep this stuff in mind:
>no heart pieces or containers, skulltula rewards, capacity upgrades, magic meter upgrades (beyond the death mountain fairy), no farore's or nayru's, only one bottle, no hylian shield, no deku nuts, no magic beans, no optional songs (sun's song, etc), no lens of truth (if you get tripped up here i can show you a really easy way to make it through haunted wasteland by memory), no fire/ice arrows, no epona, no biggoron's sword, no blue potion, etc.
>ditch deku shield, goron tunic and zora tunic at your leisure
prolly a few things i'm forgetting but the golden rule is, if you don't need it to beat the game, don't take it. currently doing shadow temple (did spirit first) and then i'm off to ganon's tower and i've managed to get by on very little. it's been a lot of fun and i'll be tempted to play this way going forward since it cuts a lot of the fat.
