I still stand by that design as good for having the most inputs on a peripheral- While retaining ergonomic and index-able sets of controls.
It could still be the future as far as I'm concerned.
Perhaps it could likely be improved. I feel though, I tried to make sure that mainstream most used controls were minimally obstructed.

An earlier version had omega as the Z position. It's also why it was themed in other alternative controller sets with six buttons in black. The yellow upside-down star just fit artistically. Plus, Six66 face buttons is an inescapable theme. ;)

Why is it so impossible to find a controller like this? Just a standard Xbox controller with 6 face buttons instead of 4 without removing any other buttons. If it's because Xinput is getting in the way then just clone LB and RB for your additional two face buttons, no retro system ever had 6 face buttons AND four shoulder buttons anyway. Every one I have found with six face buttons tends to either remove other buttons, not have analog triggers, or even remove analog sticks.

How would this even work?

In order to have that flip-up top there would be almost no depth to the buttons or d-pad, so they would feel horrible to use. Where does the wire connecting them even go? The only place I can see that would work out on something like that is from the back connector, which would also be flimsy as that's the only thing keeping the now wobbly piece of plastic that is all of the controller buttons in place.

The keyboard would also be a trainwreck to use. The left-side of it being carved into a curve like that to make room for what I assume is a mouse-like touchpad would make typing on it annoying, but nowhere near as annoying as how much the analog sticks would get in the way of your thumbs for nearly any place you want to put them on the keyboard.

Not to mention why would you need a keyboard built into the controller that badly? And with this design, you can't easily swap back to the standard controller if something suddenly happens in the game and you need to control your character again.

And to top it all off, every one of these issues was already solved over 15 years ago when they made an accessory that is a tiny keyboard that slots onto the BOTTOM of the controller instead of the middle/top, and I am not even sure if that's the first example of such a thing or if it even happened years earlier.

fun fact, these still work even today on modern pc's with win11, even the motion controls, although its acts as direct input controller, and the motion part is just "analog stick" mapped to the motion sensor, it kinda works but its just gimmick and without the sidewinder win95 software and drivers you'll lose a lot of functionality, same thing with this one >>10073273 but you really need the sidewinder stuff to make it usable.

Also the freestyle has worst d-pad ever, even worse than x360, internally you have to press both contact points to move up/down/left/right, just pressing one moves diagonally, and because the d-pad is rotated 45degrees(so its "X" and not "+" if that makes any sense), and how its over designed, you'll just end up with a lot of accidental inputs and trying to run straight in tomb raider for example is nearly impossible so it makes precision platforming impossible, I cant even go through the training course in TR2 because how shitty it is.

Thrustmaster Mini-T Turbo

Had ps2 and usb connection. extra powerful rumble. just worked on ps1, ps2, pc, and even ps3. in addition to turbo, it could remap any buttons or analog axes. This was handy for certain games, like for getting normal dual analog control in agent under fire. even the d-pad was ok. I loved this pad but I don't know why they made it a fucking MINI and not normal sized. It's not very comfortable for me as an adult.

(at least some of) the microsofts controllers with gameports are not standard gameport controllers(as they came out around the time before USB become common), and thus requires the sidewinder drivers+software to function, the gameport to usb adapter that came with some of the ms's controllers is just weird passthrough adapter that only works with ms's controllers and if you plug them into modern computers the windows recognizes them as usb direct input controller, at least with the freestyle one.

I was thinking locking hidden analogue with full dpad board on top. Or maybe concentric dpad buttons in three circles, maybe some kind of normal dpad on top with a curved underside for physical pressure difference. Or failing that, a measure of distance/ speed of direction input from the centre.

If there was a great, usable dpad stick can you imagine replacement? Would this change things significantly? And what bonus controls would you like to see in it's (dpad or sticks) place?

I need to rant about the Logitech F310 and F710. They are so fucking close to being good controllers. WONDERFUL D-Pad with a fatal flaw, fantastic face buttons, best Start+Select buttons, mostly nice grip. But the flaws...

D-Pad can be pressed all the way in because it has no pivot. It doesn't affect since I'm always pressing the edges of the D-Pad, but for most people this kills the controller, which is understandable. :(

The fucking triggers ruin everything. Stiff springy pieces of shit that make holding the controller comfortably impossible due to their upwards slope. Needs to be reverted back to flat buttons like the old Logi controllers before them, which were nice to hold.

The shoulder bumpers are sub-par. They feel fragile and they ARE fragile. You need to press harder than the actual click to actuate them, and if you drop the controller they're goners.

The analog sticks are way too stiff, desperately need less tension. Also, F310s/F710s manufactured before a certain year (2012?) have no analog deadzone, but later-manufactured ones have a GIANT built-in deadzone that can't be removed and I fucking hate it.

Okay I'm done spergposting.

Very cool. This paints a finer picture of the evolution from prototype to final.
I'm really curious how that right stick would feel to use in that position. Never really seen something like that.

Anyone tried one of these?

Hell yeah! It's a really comfy controller to use, snagged mine off Mercari for pretty cheap. Mine's solid red though, wish I had that see through blue.

I think the video suggested that the buttons/ inputs and the textures would be fully customisable. Far more interesting designs could be made using the techniques they suggest.

This was my favorite Playstation controller. I used this unless I needed analog control. Simply a better version of the originals, especially the d-pad. There was also another version that had the same d-pad, but shaped like the sony controller. Later there was a version with analog but I couldn't get one. ASCII also made several other interesting controllers of decent build quality like a one-hander, a 6-button fight pad, beatmania, and arcade sticks. Also some very strange ones like the resident evil pad and the gamecube keyboard controller.

I understand turbo, but what games make use of the auto function?

>> No.10104589

>>10104371
Turbo could be rhythmic pulses or when pressed. Full auto could be on constantly. Like turbo sometimes on the pause button being used for slow. It varies for different controllers obviously.
