This console recently caught my interest. Not familiar with the library besides Bomberman, Bonk, and Adventure Island. Any must-plays for this thing? Preferably games in English or with fan translations. thx

It's great for shmups, beat 'em ups, Valis, Ys series, and a few really cool arcade ports. Some people also really like Rondo of Blood whatever. Anyway just make sure you get the CD BIOS and enjoy. What type of games do you like so we can recommend?

Nice to have an actual TurboGrafx thread for once, definitely cooler and more obscure than whatever Saturn was supposed to be. My favorite games are

>Ginga Fukei Densetsu Sapphire
>Cotton: Fantastic Night Dreams
>Super Air Zonk
>Advanced V.G.
>Riot Zone
>Double Dragon II

Road Spirits is also okay but probably considered kusoge by most.

I had one as a kid with just under 40 games.
Loved it. Did not have a Duo, tho.

My picks:
Somer Assault (sentient, interdimensional slinky fights the zodiac and an evil sorceress)
Cadash (best home version)
Jack Chan's Action Kung Fu (see Cadash)
Tricky Kick (sokoban-like puzzler)
Boxy Boys (literally sokoban)
Neutopia I and II (not TOO good, but decent Zelda clones)
Samurai Ghost (I didn't like it as a kid, but lots of other people do so you might as well)
Magical Chase (fun af shooter)
Star Soldier and Soldier Blade (see Magical Chase)
Final Lap Twin (racing game with an RPG mode)
World Court Tennis (see Final Lap Twin but swap racing for tennis)
New Adventure Island
Parasol Stars (Bubble Bobble sequel)
Air Zonk (see Magical Chase)
Shockman (not great, but decent enough; Megaman without the weapons upgrades; Nip-only SNES sequel is fun af, tho)

Didn't have, but emulated on Magic Engine in the late 90s and liked:
Bomberman 94 (dat multiplayer; my parents went on vacay for a week and left me at home and had friends over constantly to do teen shit and play Bomberman 94)
Photograph Boy (shooter, but not like you'd expect one to be; have to try it for yourself)
Rondo (duh)
Toilet Kids (basically TwinBee with shit)
Liquid Kids (loved the arcade version as a kid and this one's not too bad)

Played years later and liked:
Maerchen Maze (kinda like a Kiki KaiKai-like)

Would not recommend:
Ys 3 (Genesis version is better, IMO; yes, even with redbook)
Exile 2 (can't be beaten)
Any Disney game (Darkwing Duck was such utter fucking shit, holy hell)
Keith Courage (always reminded me of the sidescrolling parts of Kid Icarus but less good)
Hatris (NES version is better in all ways except colour)
Legendary Axe I and II (just never liked either very much at all)

The Legendary Axe is a really great one (you'll probably like it's sequel, too). So are Wonder Momo, Military Madness, Coryoon: Child of Dragon, Power Drift, The Legend of Valkyrie, Parasol Stars, Battle Lode Runner, Neutopia 1-2, and Dragon Egg!, and Dragon's Curse (which is an expanded, "off-brand" port of Wonderboy III: The Dragon's Trap, but with saving). I also like Vigilante, Die Hard, Metal Stoker, City Hunter, Genpei Tomaden (and its sequel, Samurai Ghost), Bravoman, Dungeon Explorer, Bikkuriman World, and Blue Blink (Aoi Blink). It also has the only retro game version of Stratego on it, which is pretty awesome to me.

Two anime adventure games I know of are Bubblegum Crash and Maison Ikkoku (House of the Moment), if you like those types of games.

I played through and beat a major favorite, Ninja Spirit, but it wasn't my cuppa tea (even though I love the Genesis Shinobi games and other ninja games like Hagane).

CD games you must play are Ys Book I & II, Ys III: Wanderers from Ys, Ys IV: Dawn of Ys, and Motteke Tamago (Take the Egg). There's also The Dynastic Hero (off-brand CD version of Wonderboy in Monster World).

I preordered one, there's no way of really knowing if it'll truly be worth it until units are delivered, but Analogue's products are generally high-quality. I assume it'll be eventually jailbroken so you don't have to use physical Hucards and CD's, but there's no way of knowing yet.

If you don't already have a decent game collection for the system, I'd almost say it isn't worth starting, and you're better off getting a PC Engine Mini from Amazon Japan.

The CD add-on allowed for voice acting and tons of sprites. They used this for a lot of text and voice acting heavy games... which do not translate AT ALL. It along with the Saturn are the most Japanese required consoles, and outsider fans tend to focus on the arcade ports and action titles. There's a trickle of fan-translations over the years.

The console had a shit ton of these genres that never show up on Engish "best" releases:

>you had a point until you listed "quiz games, board games, mahjong and sim games".

The CD versions of those games heavily feature characters, dialogue, and cut-scenes. The quiz games are all in Japanese with Japanese voice acting (some don't even have text for the questions, just voices!). And even Mahjong games are heavily story focused. They made all of these into "anime games"!

Is this a Mahjong game, or an anime? You decide!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ELt2hWWaszw

Princess Minerva has over 1 hour of voiced cutscenes:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tq3dDpljFyo

The point being that they perfected the art of anime/movie-games when westerners were trying to cram FMVs of live actors onto the CDs and failing. These games are incomprehensible without translation.

>but what was the PC Engine?

1. More shooting games (MD was their main competitor for that)
2. Some platformers (but MD and SFC had the edge on that overall)
3. Weird experimental titles no one else had
4. Endless voice acted animu movie games in various formats.

Nowhere else are you gonna get 1 hour of voice acted cut-scenes in 1993 in an rpg. Or a board game with voice acting and a fully fleshed out story. Or a Mahjong quest game with cutscenes. Or a voice acted Romance sim.

Look through issues of PC Engine Fan to get an idea what the console was like in glorious Nippon.

Whether these games are GOOD or not depends on your tastes. It's certainly a novelty to have a voice acted visual novel or sim game with anime aestetics in the early 90's.

Fun fact; Akira Kitamura (Mega Man 1-2 director) was cutscene artist for the PC Engine version of Virgin Dreams. The game is a sim/story game where you follow a young aspiring model as she advances her career. It's often mistaken for a porn game, but aside from a few riske scenes, it's straight.

Oh tha'ts another thing. A few PCE-CD games fetured some nudity.

A lot of the best and most interesting CD games are the visual novels, adventure games, simulation games, role palying games, quiz games, etc. They're all super text heavy.

That's why English lists focus on the action and shooter titles, since they are not focused on English. But that only covers half the system's library.

PCE-CD got both Princess Maker games, seemingly as a response to PM2's popularity. A cartridge console like the SFC could only get a scaled down version.

AI is going in that direction with real time text and audio translations. Problem is that it's all some shitty "app" with server when what we need is free open source software that people can plug into their emulators. So you download the Japanese to English plugin, and then you go.

Also, the games themselves are quirky historical artifacts, so don't be shocked that they're not that good. They were the original "panty quest" games with often dull gameplay, mediocre graphics, then nice anime cutscenes with sprite work and maybe some titilation. Impressive for 1993, but you can just fire up hentai today.

Yuna got a translation, and it's one of the better advneture titles which gives you some sense of how these play like.

Cotton and Magical Chase got western releases, but as far as I can tell both were very limited runs. I think they just didn't know how to handle these games since they were fast paced action games... but had cutesy graphics. That can work in japan but not North America. I've never come across anyone talking about how they played Cotton as a kid, so the release must have been limited to a few thousand tops.

Total shame, totally solid games each.

Ignore the graphics and look at the game - it's a fast paced action title. it's totally for Boys. Kirby is a gay pink blob, and they somehow turned him into a bad ass. PC Engine needed Sega or nintendo tier marketing to work.

Would love to hear more about Cotton's American release since we KNOW it happened, but no one talks about having actually owned a copy. I've seen a few videos which purport to be the American version - no voice acting, and text translated, but otherwise the same.

Magical Chase and Cotton are top tier games with broad appeal, and some of the best shooting games of the era, just that it's not obvious to boys in uSA in 1993.

Air Zonk
Bonk's Adventure
Bonk's Revenge
Bonk 3: Bonk's Big Adventure (TG-CD)
Castlevania: Rondo of Blood (TG-CD)
Devil's Crush
The Legendary Axe
Lords of Thunder (TG-CD)
Neutopia
Neutopia II
New Adventure Island
R-Type Complete CD (TG-CD)
Splatterhouse
Ys I & II (TG-CD)

I believe it and Coryon use the Magical Chase engine. As in the NEC people were so enamored with it they used it for some other games. I would love to know the technical wizardry behind it, since the PCE stock does not natively support parallax scrolling like the SFC and MD does and it has to be done in software which is tricky.

The point is that parallax scrolling is NOT natively supported by the PC Engine, and they're pulling it off on the base console (an 8-bit CPU mind you), not any of the fancy upgrades. That's genuinely impressive and something like 90% of PCE devs were not able to do it. I think by the end of its life only like 10-15 games had proper parallax scrolling.

Did you see the Ninja Gaiden remake? Genuine upgrade all around... but no parallax scrolling and it just looks flat and pathetic.

If the console could natively support it, then they could have done a better job competing with the MD and SFC.

Ninja Gaiden got shafted in the re-release department. It got a Turbografx port with mostly upgraded (if a bit drab) graphics, but awful background scrolling and most of its awesome original soundtrack replaced for some reason. Then it got a SNES re-release with a pitiful visual remaster where they basically added two colors and called it a day, along with lame 16-bit versions of the NES music. Why couldn't they have just taken the Turbografx version's graphics and improved on that?

What they really should've done was re-released the trilogy on Sega CD, with a glorious early-90s MIDI soundtrack and proper anime cutscenes to show the leap in technology.

So I really want to know how big the print run was, and how many they sold. I think 1993 was right then TG was dying, so they likely just never sold most of them. All my time online I've come across a single person in a youtube comment claiming they owned the game. There must be only like a few thousand copies out there or something.
