I doubt Android's userbase is larger than Linux in the context of gaming handhelds specifically because RG35XX and Miyoo Mini+ seem to be the most popular handhelds recently and they both run non-Android Linux-based OSs. The performance and battery life on Linux is often better than on Android on the same SoC because you don't have Google Play services running in the background. And good luck running Windows on an ARM device with 2GB of RAM.

Guess which OS Steam Deck runs by default. Hint: it isn't Windows or Android. And I was comparing in the context of handhelds running Linux vs handhelds running Android specifically. And there aren't that many handhelds running Android, and certainly none are as popular as MM+ or RG35XX. I can't speak for other users in these threads but I certainly do, video games are the single activity I hate doing on a smartphone just because of how battery draining and inconvenient it can be if you don't want to deal with touch screen controls. With a small dedicated handheld I save battery life for my phone and have an infinitely more comfortable experience, plus it helps that I'm not one of the retards that chases after every single new chinkheld release because it plays GameCube and Wii games 5% faster. I'm happy with games up to Dreamcast on a handheld, anything more powerful I use my Emulator box for.

Been maybe four months since I got my MM+, only third party portable game system I've ever bought or owned. Last game I finished (for the 10th time) was Symphony of the Night, going to move on to the GBA Castlevania games, of which I have never played any, ever. But I've heard they are great, will play them in release order.
I thought the MM+ might be too small for hour long action platforming game sessions, but SotN was fun and comfortable the whole way through. Really it doesn't feel any smaller than holding a Game Boy Colour. For 60 USD including shipping I've already gotten my money's worth out of it. 128 micro SD in it, maybe halfway filled now (lot of cd games on it).

I was planning on getting one of these Chinese handhelds a few months back, and was torn of a few Anbernic, PowKiddy and Retroid ones mostly, but at the same time my smartphone did start to fail me, as it not only got quite slow, but the battery and charging both started to fail aswell, I decided to get a new smartphone to replace it as it had been a few years since I onwed that one, but I couldn't just throw it away, and selling it probably wouldn't get me much money... so I did a factory reset and turned it into an emulation station pretty much, but touch screen controls to me are just a subpar way to play any video game... thankfully I realized that a cheap telescopic controller, at least where I live, was cheaper to buy than any dedicated handheld.

So, fast forward a few months, and I'm still using it and having a lot of fun, recently replaying some PS1 stuff I grew up with, my Galaxy M30 and MOCUTE-060 combo is a winner for sure!

Windows adds a ton of overhead, compared to linux at least. Watch some of the Steam Deck Windows versus Linux videos, Windows usually performs 10-15% fewer FPS on most games with like, 2 or 3 exceptions where they are equal. I'd bet money those instances could be fixed tweaking the Proton version/settings however.

I used my galaxy s9 for years with various types of controllers/clips. The Gamesir X2 being my favorite combination. Only issues with the setup were having to take the phone out of the case so it could connect to the USB port, Saturn emulation still lacking, and moonlight/steam link game streaming left a lot to be desired. Running AetherSX2 and Dolphin MMJR at full speed was like witchcraft.

Now I just emulate on the Steam Deck. And yeah, I take it with me pretty much everywhere I go.

I'm pretty happy with my current setup, so I don't see myself buying a new controller in the future unless this one breaks, though I did consider this one, but ultimately went with the one I'm currently using because it was half the price, had both big analog sticks and bigger buttons, and the analog sticks were symmetrical, also prefer bluetooth so I can use it on my Android and my GF can use it on iOS without issue, and the smartphone slightly wiggling while the usb port is plugged in gives me the impression that it could damage it in the long run. I appreciate the advice though, it's still quite a good option that I'm sure would serve me well too.

I've done a few changes to my setup:
1. I removed the glass screen protector as I never get the smartphone out of the controller and I was using a bad protector in general, as it was poorly sized and covered some parts of the screen with its black border, including the bottom, making it more difficult to make the Android buttons show up when needed.
2. Speaking of which, I replaced the Android buttons with the swipe gestures common on Apple's smartphones, which was impossible with that screen protector covering the bottom.
3. I enabled the option to cut part of the screen at the top, most specifically the area parallel to the camera as the hole can bother me somewhat, I prefer a truly full screen.
I'm really happy with this slightly different setup, it's not too different, but different enough that I notice the difference and appreciate it, it's nice.

I've owned many an Anberic RG 3 inch device, and the RG353P has become my favourite.
It's got the most ergonomic design thanks to being modelled directly after an 8bitdo controller.

Second choice is RG351V because the vertical orientation is actually very nice, especially for playing on my side in bed.

I wanted to enjoy my RG351M, but the metal shell was actually much more uncomfortable to use than I expected; the square edges weren't ergonomic, the shell would heat up and the mild warmth of the metal didn't feel nice in my hands for extended periods, and it's slightly high weight was more strain than I expected.

RG353P has pretty much solidified that if I were to get another handheld down the line, it needs those ergonomics, and hopefully a better d-pad. The diagonals are too sensitive.

I feel like it makes sense because T618 makes it powerful enough to run N64, Dreamcast and some PS2 and Gamecube. All of those systems are analog-centric but use 4:3 native aspect ratios. If you mainly want to play NES, SNES, GB, GBC and GBA, there are dozens of much cheaper handhelds that can emulate those perfectly. But still, stacked shoulder buttons are unusable for PSX and PS2, that's my opinion.

If I downloaded every single retro game from every console up to the PS1/GBA, would I be able to fill 320 GBs? I bought a 64gb and a 256gb Samsung mSD card from Amazon for my MM+. SINCE I needed to pay $25 minimum for free shipping, I just went for the biggest-sized pair of cards that would get me closest to over $25. In retrospect tho, I feel like a dumbo, since there’s no way I’m gonna fill up even half of that space, and apparently anything bigger than a 32gb card requires a separate program to reformat it.

If PSP is your goal I'd go for something with 16:9 aspect ratio because that will usually give you a bigger display and bars on the sides are better than bars on top and bottom. Besides, you can use widescreen hacks in 3D PSX games. Retroid Pocket 3 (without plus) for example: https://www.aliexpress.com/item/1005005121307691.html
The chipset in it is much better than RK3566 devices you posted, and that's important for PSP emulation. And you really don't want to play PSP games on a small 4:3 display, trust me. RK2023 has inline shoulder buttons which are IMO unacceptable for PSX games. If Android is a deal breaker for you, then X55 is probably the next best option.

There are no systems stronger than PSX that benefit from that increased power and still have most of their games catalog playable with just the D-pad. The next easiest console to emulate is N64, and RG35XX can kinda do it, but N64 controller has a billion buttons and an analog stick that most games use, so there is no point. The N64 emulator is not included in the stock firmware and the majority of custom firmware images, so nobody really bothers to test it. And IMO, I think that's fine. Buying a device without an analog stick for N64 is just stupid.

Not everyone likes the bigger form factor and 16:9 screen when most systems that the handheld is able to emulate are 4:3 or close to it. So you end up with not much more screen real estate in exchange for not being pocketable. Bad trade-off.

Why is Gameboy Advance twice as expensive as Nintendo DS nowadays? Honestly mind boggling considering there's really nothing special about GBA while NDS has the dual screen gimmick that still hasn't been successfully replicated in any emulation device to this day (GPDS might change that if it't real). So while GBA can be emulated well on basically anything nowadays, playing DS games on the original DS is still much better than on any emulation device. And most DS models can play GBA games on top of that! So going from GBA to DS you gain access to the whole DS library and only lose access to GB and GBC games. And personally? I think every GB and GBC game has a GBA equivalent that surpasses it. Yet it's easy to find a DS in good condition for like 50 EUR but GBAs without backlit screen and scratched to hell go for 85 EUR. Shit's crazy.

That's actually a flaw because you have to keep shelling out for new batteries and even if you get rechargeable ones, taking them out of the device to charge and putting them back in is a PITA. DS battery is lithium-polymer, but you have a service door with a single screw to get to it and 3rd party replacements will continue to get made for a long time. The benefit of being able to charge it inside the device that outweighs the con of it not being a universal standard IMO.
>lacks any form of wireless/internet connectivity.

I'll give some input on this one because I played the original DS version emulated on my PC and watched someone else's playthrough of the Steam PC version. The PC version is just off. Characters have actual spoken dialog now, but the original DS "bitspeak" had its charm too. Characters use the same low-resolution sprites from the DS version, but upscaled with a filter, which seems lazy to me. Instead of having the player figure out the correct series of choices to get to the true ending with some hints in credits for another ending, they just gave PC gamers a flowchart rendering the subtle hints in the credits completely pointless. Lastly, they replaced the final puzzle with a one that arguably doesn't match the story as well as the original one. I consider the DS version better. The PC version is good too, just not as good. So the DS version is probably the best version of an already great game. Doesn't surprise me that original carts are rising in price.

So I got a RG351MP about 2 years ago and it's battery is starting to show it's age. I was wondering what notable devices have come out since then that I maybe interested in picking up. I want the dpad to be in the same place as this one, if it isn't it's a deal breaker. I would prefer a high quality plastic shell, I don't mind if its metal but I dont want cheap shitty plastic. I'd prefer to get one with a 4:3 screen size but its not required. I'd like a device with better N64 emulation mainly, DC would be cool too but isn't as necessary. I don't care about PS2, GCN, PSP, or Saturn so anything that powerful would be wasteful. Any recommendations, any price point is fine just wanting to know my options or if I should just replace the battery on this one.

Look into RG353P or RG353PS.
It's an incremental upgrade over the RG351 series but enough that it makes fullspeed SA-1 SNES games straight-forward, and can do a bit of Dreamcast too.

The main difference between the P and PS is that the former can dual boot into Android or Linux, and has more RAM by 1GB. The Android environment is preferred for N64 emulation, it's lacking on the Linux side.
Ergonomically, the plastic shell being shaped like a SNES controller or 8bitdo controller makes it one of the most comfortable to use for longer periods, and it's one of the few Anbernic handhelds to have two rows of shoulder buttons.

>Screen is gorgeous, looks much better than it does in photos. Only played SH4 and Powerslave Exhumed so far but both look great on this thing, it feels just right for these old PC games/remasters. Granted its not huge either so playing games with tons of detail/info on screen is probably going to be a nightmare.
>Feels decently comfortable to play games on. Has nice groves on the side and feels a bit thicker than the Switch Lite so its more comfortable to play games on. Its not as comfortable as the Steam Deck for people with big hands, but it still feels decent.
>Only have the model with 8GB of RAM, but it still feels like it'll be perfectly capable of playing a ton of games on a device with a small form factor.
>Small form factor is both a blessing and a curse. Its pretty portable, but unfortunately it also means that it comes at a cost of battery life. I think after an hour or more I was at 48% battery life for SH4 at 1080p, so maybe it'll be another few years before we get an energy efficient Windows 11 device.
>Windows 11 is absolutely NOT meant to be used with a touch screen. Its mostly functional but I had some issues early on where it wouldn't work right.

Booted up SH4 after putting it in Sleep Mode and the visuals just spazzed out, returning nothing but a black/grey screen. The UI was still there so it wasn't like it crashed or anything.
>Audio quality from the speakers is poor. Sounds muffled and quiet. Unfortunately missed out on the speaker upgrade, so maybe use earplugs if you want to use this device
>AYASpace is an "okay" attempt at offering Steam Deck UI on a Windows handheld and it's nice that there's a built in function like PlayNite for this device, along with the option to download installers from within. There's some decent customization too like for TDP and the colors for the RGB lights around the analog sticks (you can even turn them off), but its slow and at times buggy. Also has plenty of broken English, not unintelligible so there's that.

Beyond that its a decently fine device for what it is. It won't replace my Steam Deck but despite its flaws I like it. The only thing that sucks is that this model is probably the cheapest we'll ever get to a "cheap" Windows handheld that has decent performance for a while. That and I am concerned about whether or not there will be ways to replace the battery. Other than that, Ayaneo seems to be a decent enough brand since they ship on time and offer fine quality, I just wonder if we'll ever get much competitors in the "budget" market for Windows handhelds.

To be fair you can get most SNES games to work well on cheaper systems they just can't be chipped games like Mario Kart, Star Fox, Kirby Super Star and Dream Land 3. You used to be able to get a 2DS for $30 in some pawn shops and flea markets that could run 90% of the SNES library reliably until people price gouged the fuck out of it when Nintendo stopped making them.

Figured I may as well give a quick update before I head off to bed. For Monkey King it seemed to be fine. Made it to the end of Stage One, but died at the bird boss multiple times. Not due to the D-pad, more because I'm still trying to learn the attack pattern, game's just kicking my ass.
I feel like my preference for the D-pad just varies based on the game desu. For slower puzzle platformers or ports of retro games like Secret Agent HD and Monkey King I feel like it's absolutely perfect, for recent 2D platformers like Rayman Origins its still good though you'll still need to rebind the controls since it's not enabled by default. For some more "modern" playing indie games like Neon Abyss, I person wouldn't recommend it since by default it seems to have a "twin stick" approach to its design, though thankfully the analog sticks do a good job and the game genuinely looks gorgeous on the Air's 5.5" OLED display. Its small yeah but indie games with pixel art and retro 2D/3D games look great on it, which I feel like is the real strength of these handheld PCs more than anything. Its more preferable than playing the latest triple A release at 720-800p, lowest settings, sub 30fps with FSR or something.

Outside of being caught off guard when it turns out DHL Express charged me $59 for shipping that wasn't listed when I bought it, I really don't regret buying it. I like it as a nice little device that doesn't suck. Unless Ayaneo somehow screws the pooch when it comes to the Pocket Air, I think that should also be a nice little retro device but for Android users at least.

Trying to decide between the RG35XX, MM+, or some other cheap handheld and have a few questions.
1. Do they support mp3 and m4b? How's the support for audio books, such as remembering where you left off on a 6+ hour audio file, or being able to fast forward/rewind in short increments easily at the press of a button?
2. Do they support pdf and or epub?
3. Do any of them support text to speech reading?
4. If I plug a usb-c hub with attached ethernet into either of them, will they recognize it?
5. How about an external hard drive?
6. Can the screen turn off while still running to save battery, such as if an audio file is playing?
7. Is there any way to connect a second controller for 2 player games?

Can you guys help me out? I bought a ROG Ally with the intention of using it primarily as an emulation device but my experience with it has been absolutely and utterly horrible. Stupid decision. A ton of issues both on the software and hardware end. I tried to install three emulators but none of those works perfectly (PPSSPP, mGBA, MelonDS). This thing can't even fucking run GTA LCS or GTA VCS. For context, I used my Windows 11 laptop for emulation before but now I'm using it for work so that's not an option anymore, and it could run almost every retro game perfectly up to the 3ds. What other handheld would you recommend me? I'm interested in GBA, PSP, NDS and some 3DS and PS2. Not the Steam Deck, too big to carry around.

So modern emulator core development is about striving for accuracy, which comes at a performance cost.
All these retro handhelds do is throw a Linux distribution of Retroarch and all the viable libretro cores on there.

The vast majority of SNES stuff is easy to emulate, but the juicy stuff that uses add-on chips are tougher.
Then there are ambitious ROM hacks that are impressive on a technical level, like A Plumber For All Seasons. That doesn't play full-speed on an RG351 device, and if you switch to one of the better performing SNES cores, you'll get all kinds of display issues like pink skies instead of parallax backgrounds.

Klonoa (+Klonoa 2) - fun platformer
Crash Nitro Kart - Really fun if you like 2D Mario Kart
Konami Krazy Racers - Another fun 2D Mario Kart like game
Donkey Kong Country 3 - if your a fan of the original trilogy this version of the game adds an entire extra world with new bonuses with a new OST by the guy who did the first 2 SNES games OSTs.

A few words to anyone who wants to buy RG280V or Revo K101+ to play GBA games: official specs say that the display is 320x480. Now, this might lead you to believe that it's a 3:2 display just like the official GBA display, just with twice the pixel density for perfect fractional scaling. You might think that they just listed the dimensions in the wrong order because the display obviously looks wider than taller. But that's wrong: It really is 320 pixels horizontally and 480 vertically. But how could that be? You see, the pixels aren't square. They are half as tall as they are wide. So even though there are more pixels vertically than there are horizontally, they take up less space. And the firmware will just merge those half-pixels, giving you the effective resolution of 320x240. So PSX games designed for 640x480 look much better than GBA games because they simply skip drawing every other pixel. NES games look fantastic because NES is 256x240, giving you 1:1 scale with some pillarboxing. But GBA games look like ass. IMO, this is completely inexcusable on the Revo because it's supposed to be the hardware clone of GBA, yet it displays GBA games like ass. Very few reviews mention this. You have been warned.

The shell seems to have been replaced with ExtremeRate Revitro shell (their sticker is on the bottom) but the buttons on that model are supposed to be black, not golden (https://extremerate.com/products/ips-ready-upgraded-chrome-gold-glossy-custom-replacement-housing-shell-for-gameboy-advance-sp-gba-sp-compatible-with-both-ips-standard-lcd-console-screen-not-included-aspd4001?_pos=21&_sid=19ed18190&_ss=r).). Is this a discontinued earlier version or something? Or did the owner just spray-paint those buttons on his own? It's interesting either way because he's only asking 75 EUR for this, which is the going rate of old scratched-up Gameboys.
