What is your opinion of this game? Is it as great as everyone says? I really like the dream like atmosphere of it

not worth the discs i burned it on, let alone the 1000 shekels it goes for on jewbay

>I really like the dream like atmosphere of it
that's pretty much its biggest appeal. but i got quickly bored of the combat (wasted potential), didn't like most "dungeons", didn't care much for the characters (all 3 of them), even though it's cool to find some docs detailing the lore, and some parts are ridiculously bad graphically. the saturn was already dead when the game was released, so maybe they didn't finish it. overpriced + unfinished + on a relatively obscure console = masterpiece for the average vr connoisseur.

Starts out fantastic. Gameplay is like nothing else which is a huge draw for someone like me who played every fucking game under the sun.
But unfortunately fizzles out in discs 3 and 4. The part where you lose your dragon is boring. The finale is easy.

tl;dr super original but loses its charm in the later discs.

Unfortunately in this day and age we can finally prove Sega saturn fans wrong by simply playing their super rare amazing games and coming to the conclusion that they were "okay," but nothing as amazing as originally described. Panzer Dragoon Zwei is practically unplayable by todays standards, I don't care what people say, its a visual cacophony for the most part, but that doesn't mean its gameplay is bad. Panzer Dragoon Saga is a good RPG, but I wouldn't compare it to anything beyond that period it came out in genre-wise. Its going to all be down to what you personally enjoy obviously.

I played it for the first time ever a year ago. Great game with lots of 90s charm, if you like Saturn and if you like old games you'll like it but I'm not sure I understand the cult-like fanaticism over it, that could just be me though since I'm contrarian. Don't get me wrong though, it's a great old school RPG. The twist at the end made me chuckle too. Great soundtrack, atmosphere, etc.

I get the impression a lot of the appeal is it’s such a technical achievement for its time especially on the weaker of the three systems at the time with its 3D environments that you could freely move around in I mean it looks way more impressive than FFVII and that’s such a groundbreaking part of video game history so the fact that something so comparable from that time exists makes it really special I was just wondering what people who actually played it think of the game itself

>> No.10059713

I thought it was great. Not worth paying for but a great rpg for people who don’t like rpgs like me. Interesting story, unique battle system. Exploration and stuff are cool. It’s good. Is it what people build it up to be? Not really, but stuff rarely is. If it were a deep cut that was never talked about it would be the absolute biggest hidden gem ever, but as it is its just a good cult game that gets overhyped.

Lots of people in this thread who clearly haven’t played the game. It’s fun and unique, my only complaint is how easy it is to accidentally lock yourself out of the ultimate dragon form. No game is worth that asking price, but there are many different options for playing it otherwise.

It's not anywhere near $1000 good, but it's a very fun short RPG. cool setting, writing characters. great aesthetics. satisfying combat, though the game's length does work in its benefit as there is no depth.

The ENTIRE game is voice acted. very very impressive.

Ultimately there just aren't enough places to go or things to do in the game. I'd happily have traded the insanely ambitious 3D for some prerendered backdrops and Grandia style isometrics if it meant getting more story, more characters, more locations and more goddamn lore.

>> No.10060583

It's great, but because it has one of the highest price tags on one of the most expensive consoles to collect for it is easily dismissed by disinterested gamers pretending they played it by watching walkthroughs.

I find it unfortunate for a franchise characterized by fast paced highly cinematic action to devolve into random encounter scrolling-through-menus slop. Also going from a unique made up language into standard japanese cheapens it further.
Overall it was a bad direction for the franchise to go towards especially since we know it was forced decision by the higher ups who felt an RPG was crucial to compete with Playstation's Final Fantasy VII

>> No.10061973

>The project was arduous and repeatedly delayed; incorporating the Panzer Dragoon shooting elements with full 3D computer graphics and voice acting, both unusual features in RPGs at the time, pushed the Saturn to its technical limits and strained team relations. Two staff members died during development, which the director, Yukio Futatsugi, attributed to stressful working conditions.

I beat it in 2016 and I feel it's one of the best RPGs of all time. The draw quickly became the combat for me, the way every enemy is defined and the various set ups they get thrown out to you in really keeps things interesting. It's always satisfying when you secure the Excellent ratings in combat and are showered with rewards. There's no point in the game where it feels like you can grind your way out of a situation, everything hinges on figuring out how best to configure your dragon for fighting whatever it is you're up against, and being flexible enough to switch things up. At the same time you'll rarely ever shake the feeling that the way you chose to win a fight is *the* way to do it. Speccing in a different stat unlocks so many options that you can conjure up half a dozen effective strategies for any encounter.

Then there's the presentation, while the 3D won't really wow anyone with its level of detail, the environments are fun to parse and move around in, characters are fun to engage with, and the use of colors always feels like a treat. The music is superb and the way it weaves from airy orchestras to synths, tribal drum beats and the occasional vocals really helps tie together the identity of the game.

It feels as if with every scenario the game fixes up for you it's trying to impress you. It does a great job of it - the raid on the Empire's air base is one of my favorite moments - how the boss culminates in this race against the clock. It's only let down by the fact the game can be pretty easy. A wrong approach to battle will see you wiped out in two turns but when you do figure things out, it can feel a bit disappointing you aren't in for more of a fight. It's a similar feel to when you know the robot masters' weakness in Mega Man. It really can make the fight a triviality. I suppose this all culminates in the story which gives you plenty to read into. Connections to the bible, the cast of characters and the world - there's plenty to love.

PDS might lose steam towards the end, but FF7 shits the bed the second you leave midgar.
