What are your games for comfort play throughs?
For me these are games that you regularly play to completion and don't take all too long to beat.
What makes the game enjoyable to you? Is it just nostalgia? Are you looking to or currently in the process of adding a game to that comfort list?

>> No.10057621

For me it's the thread picture, Ardy Lightfoot. It is just a fun game after you have gotten the hang of the tail jump.
I particularly enjoy the music and the mostly textless, kinda cinematic story.
I currently try to beat Super Turrican, but the train stage is where it mostly ends for me.

Viewtiful Joe
Devil May Cry 1
Resident Evil 1 and 2
Crash Bandicoot 1
Ape Escape 1

About to go back to university after neeting since covid and I think I'll need these guys around just to quell the anxiety about everything. I hate being around people and I have strong doubts about my course. Very stressful but at least I have my gf and vidya.

those games sound comfy anon
I hope you find a way to enjoy university
maybe you find another introvert friend which whom you can play some games or watch something occasionally
I don't need too much interaction myself and had a near perfect living situation for that. I would meet up with my roomie on the balcony, then after some talking/drinking/smoking we went into our separate rooms to place single player games. Still probably my best friend

Tenchu 1 for me. I can beat it in hour and a half by standard means, the music is perfect, and it always gets me back to Christmas 1999 when we got PS1 and this game.

Vandal Hearts is a regular go to for me. Tonally it's not terribly comforting, though in a way I guess there's the matter of a character overcoming personal issues while staying true to his sense of morality in a corrupt world. I guess that's kind of uplifting. But largely I just like it because it's a very straight forward game. I like SRPGs a lot but often I just don't have the energy to micromanage a bunch of numbers and really just want to move my dudes to kill the other dudes and complete objectives.

pce has a lot of fun short arcade ports or arcade style games

if you wanna get uber short, vigilante is 6-7 minutes long
if you want to play r-type in the two part hucards, each one is like 10 minutes long for 4 levels each

galaga 88 is godtier and probably 20-25 minutes long
lot of caravan shooters are designed to be replayable for score, 2 or 5 minute modes. my favorite is the konami developed force gear, and parodius has a caravan mode with 3 secret bosses
youkai douchuuki is tricky at first but only 20 minutes long, with 5 endings based on your final stage performance. lot easier than the nes version
super dodgeball is an awesome port, 15 minutes long and endlessly loops

Nowadays Quake 3 Arena and Quake 2 are what I would call 'comfort games'.
I played nothing but UT99 for six years straight and I still go back to it, but at this point in my life I like how simple Quake 3 is; whenever I want to unwind I just jump into a map with some bots and that's enough for me because it feels fresh and entertaining to rely on my movement and how I use weapons to defend myself. It's fast-paced and a good way to burn 15 to 30 minutes of free time.
Quake 2 is there because of tradition. It was the first FPS I ever played and I like to go back to it at least once a year, usually around New Year's Eve. I know it's not the best one out there but I enjoy powering through the SP campaing and the expansions on Hard+ in a week or two.
>>10058959
TRPGs are a great choice. I played the everloving shit out of FFT at a point where I emulated a lot of PS1 games. I should pick a romhack and play it again.

I really enjoyed Quake 3 on PS2 (too poor to afford a PC growing up) I think it was one of the first console games that figured out dual analog controls.
I still prefer Unreal Tournament over Quake, though, I have way too many hours wasted on ONS-Torlan and CTF-Face.

I have lots of these. But I'll just say Super Mario RPG.

>It's an RPG, but it's very short and breezy with no grinding. It can be beaten in a lazy weekend
>Despite the higher stakes story, the entire game feels like a summer vacation. You meet characters and go to places outside of the Mario norms. Many of these locations are in warm climates too, which just enhances this feeling.
>Personally, it produces a nostalgic wistful "end of an era" feeling in both my life ( it came out at a time where I was transitioning from grade school to middle school) and in gaming (the N64 would come out at the end of the summer fully ushering in the 3D era). It was my RPG gateway drug.

Ultima Underworld, specifically Stygian Abyss. I love UU2 too and it's probably the better game all things considered, but I can't just binge it in an evening like the first one.

Populous: The Beginning
It is simple and you beat a world in 20 minutes and stop playing if you want or move to the next world. The OST is very relaxing and I like the theme. It is like Age of Empires meets Shaman.

Totally the original Half-Life and Sonic 3 are my comfort games. They’re just muscle memory at this point and I find it very appealing that no matter how much time has passed, how old I’ve gotten and games I’ve played, those two are always there, always the same. It’s like revisiting an old childhood home if that makes sense.

>Planescape Torment
i only replay it every 4 - 5 years because of its depth and length but the atmosphere and story of the game absorbs me everytime, i think its a rare game that manages to enlighten the way you think about the world due to stuffing in real life religious material and philosophy, etc, i also just love reincarnation and destiny story's (legacy of kain is the only other game that scratches this itch)
>Symphony of the night
the music and alucard, its also an easy castlevania you can enjoy
>Spyro 1 - 3
my first games as a kid so they hold a special place in my heart, i think the colour usage in the games has a lot to do with its appeal

Ridge racer 4 for me, especially blasting through normal, it’s a 45 minute to an hour thing, and although the stories are simple i really like them. I love going through and helping all these characters grow as people. The stories are simple abd the least celebrated aspect of this game but I took away this theme of things getting more difficult the deeper you’re enraveled in whatever passion you’re pursuing.

It's original Quake SP for me - though I'm playing it via Darkplaces nowadays. I have quite enjoyed doing the Q2 SP recently.

Jedi Academy also get a playthrough pretty regularly, as does Outlaws and occasionally Dark Forces.
