Not that you’re making it but the ‘not buying in’ argument always bothers me in that it assumes an ideal marketplace where a producer is willing to adjust production based on nothing but sales. I’m likewise not the most up on most modern games but what seems to be grinding many people is the sense - right or wrong - that companies will produce ideologically infused content regardless of sales. Maybe better phrased as they’re incapable or unwilling to acknowledge ideology as impacting their sales so they don’t consider it a factor to change when looking at why a product may not have done well. Meaning that ‘not buying in’ won’t necessarily reshape the landscape. I’m intentionally vague with ‘ideology’ here because I don’t want to pin down any aspect of culture wars so just fill in your favorite bogeyman.

Thanks for your considered reply anon. I think it is right not to reduce mediaco motivations to at least immediate, sales of a product. There seems to be a (so-called) enlightened approach where reputation and liability at least are a concern.

The GTA SA hot coffee mod made waves in my part of the world, with the gleeful press doing their best to whip up a frenzy of moral panic that did result in real financial harm to Rockstar et al as the game had to be rerated, hurting sales to at least an estimable level.

The knock on effects on the GTA brand, future sales and product positioning are much harder to gauge. At the time it probably seemed more damaging than things turned out, but what potential content in future games was redacted or red-lit as a result?

This isn't your point of course. I have to refer to other media here but yes I have great disdain for tv etc content with every cynical inclusion of some 'great' moral teaching, no matter how subtle. It can be polarising to discuss and so I too dance around any specific area, although we are here to discuss adult content in games, so let's take this example:

I loved the original Leisure Suit Larry. Its poor by today's standards but what are the chances of a remake? Any film so widely known would have had at least one genuine remake by now. I'm not talking about a diluted sequel here.

Surely the executives aware of this. Perhaps there aren't enough people that think, as much as care what they consume is polluted with PC garbage. The other potential consequences of giving consumers like me what they want outweighs any immediate gain. So they kowtow to the idiotic moral standards that traditional media have held us all to (4chan gets a bashing every now and again too).

One would hope that the decline of traditional news and media sources would correct the course, but I'm yet to see the evidence for this. Self censorship is the oldest of its kind, but it HAS to be more than that
