It happened the exact moment those clickbait "Check Your Attic For These Games!" articles started popping up on YouTube. It ended up fucking over common ass game prices because not knowing anything the people who would have otherwise let stuff go for a fair price will now sit on their beat up cart only copy of Ducktales for NES until someone pays the $45 they're asking for. And they won't budge because they think everything is worth a mint so obviously they're being swindled. Which ironically causes prices to rise because someone somewhere will end up paying it, and you end up in the mother of all bubbles that we're currently in.

I don't understand how this works with auctions though. $150 is the most I'll ever pay for a game. I tried for Bomberman 64 Second Attack and sure as shit people were bidding upwards of $280 for it. If you're going to max bid within $15-$20 of a buy it now listing then just take the buy it now listing and give people a chance to get it at a lower price.

>> No.10041043

>>10041027
What auctions? Ebay is like 90% Buy-It-Nows. What everyone does these days is just look for completed listings and pick out the most recent and/or highest number and then slap a matching price tag on their shit. They still used to do this back when it was an auction site but the damage was limited because even though it was relatively inflated due to Ebay being worldwide and your random thrift store being in a random spot in a random town, it was still based on a relatively democratic pricing system. Now there is literal self-dealing and fraud going on in the second hand market with WATA and Heritage Auctions shenanigans.

Right now video games are going through what comic books went through in the 90s. Some half-truths, limited information, and outright misinformation trickled into the public consciousness and there's now rampant speculation. It's gotten to the point that just being video game related at all will cause a thrift store to put it aside in a special section and inflate the price to the point it will sit there for months.

I mean we all like to wax on about prices, but honestly 90 percent of retro games are cheaper now and your dollar is inflated compared to the msrp back then so if you stuck to that you actually wouldn’t have complaints. The complaint is “oh lawd I want a physical copy right now!!!” Then yea for select titles u may have to pay a little more. People just mad you can’t get super Mario world for a dollar anymore, it still only goes for like 20.

>> No.10041309

Im a lifelong garage saler. You can still find them there but this year many people asking much higher prices. The best way to get them now is ask at a sale that has no games or related stuff out. They are the ones that still dont know the value and will sell for cheap.

>> No.10041330

>>10041270
$20 for Super Mario World is crazy though. Even Mario/Duck Hunt is like $10 now when just a few years ago you couldn't give those away. The floor for the hobby jacked up something like 500%, which ends up making it impossible to just casually be into it. It wasn't that long ago you could buy lots. Some guy asking $30 for a box of games. Sure, they weren't anything special and you may have doubles but it was a box of games cheap enough that you didn't really care what was in it and the doubles made for good trade bait. That's just not a thing anymore. And it wasn't gradual. Prices climbing slowly over time is normal and we've seen the ebb and flow. This was practically overnight in comparison. That's not the effects of ordinary inflation.

>> No.10041332

also thrift stores are dead for games. I amassed an incredible collection over the years, now goodwill does not put any games out, they all go to some high priced retail store or online.
Smaller thrifts mostly caught on as well, they usually have more time and less inventory than the major stores so they are looking everything up now. If you have the money you can advertise and buy big collections for 30-%50 of value depending on the quality.
I have been doing this kind of thing a long time in many categories. Video games got way too much attention as a high dollar easy flip. You can still find incredible bargains on other collectibles, you must be ahead of the curve.
Another problem is the number of reseller has increased dramatically thanks to social media and too many wagies needing extra money.

Zoomer YouTubers ruined it by being socially incompetent and not realizing that getting a deal and then bragging about what a deal you got within earshot of the people you just bought it from could JUST MAYBE be interpreted as a tad rude. They have no poker face or restraint. They'll snicker during the transaction as a random boomer sells them a Gunstar Heroes for $5, enough that the guy knows something is up just not exactly what. But you sure as hell can bet he looked up the game afterwards to see what all that weirdness was about before feeling burned. It doesn't even have to be especially amazing deals, either. These kids will do that over perfectly normal priced items as they personally insult the person behind the counter through their attitude that conveys "I'm smarter than you because I know what I'm buying and you don't know what you're selling."

GameStop was a goldmine from like 2008-2011. They had a bazillion stores with so much stock PS2 and Gamecube games were practically falling out of the ceiling. You could get a dozen games for a song. And because there were so many stores it became very easy to recognize rarity because you could hit 15 spots in a single afternoon and if a game only showed up in one or two of them you had a pretty good idea it wasn't very common and might be worth picking up. I got decent games like Dual Hearts, Go Go Hypergrind, and several NIS RPGs this way. Everything was priced to move.

Different anon but I have what I think is a good example of artificial price inflation, which is Harmful Park on the PS1. Noticed this last night as I was watching videos on JP-only PS1 games. What kind of game goes from having no recorded sales to being instantly traded at $600? Even LSD traded at around $200-$300 before it's big popularity boom. Seems to support the idea that on some scale these titles are being artificially limited/inflated.

Yeah, and that's been sustained for three years. A random spike here and there because something happened to make a game hot isn't that weird. It happened to Dragon Ball GT Final Bout once DBZ took off. FFVII also doubled in price overnight after Advent Children came out and took about a year to settle back down. Every so often a random game will turn out to be critical to installing CFW so there's a rush on it, etc. But when things like that happen the cause is usually obvious and targeted. I don't know of anything in pop culture that would have caused Harmful Park to skyrocket like that and then sustain that price. But shit like that is happening everywhere.

If I were brand new to the used market I could be forgiven for not thinking anything was suspect. But I saw Atari VCS games go up and down, I saw the gradual shift in the NES market over time. I saw the Genesis staying relatively stable while the SNES spiked because of the Nintendo Tax, etc. But then out of nowhere everything went nuts. Genesis went crazy overnight. Castlevania Bloodlines for $170? What gives? Castlevania is a dead franchise now. There's no new game release driving that. That game was a stable $40 for over a decade. People will be like "inflation, bro!" as if inflation wasn't a thing before 2020. It's not like the used market was notoriously unstable beforehand. It definitely unnatural.

>> No.10041754

>>10041698
I'm really not sure there's that much demand. I think what's happening is there's a closed loop and the market is trapped in a half-deliberate, half-accidental ponzi scheme. Everyone who bought high refuses to sell low so they hold out until they find a mark who comes in late and willingly pays the asking price. But then they have trouble selling and so you end up with a market with very high prices but very little movement. A game that used to change hands a lot over time is now being tied up by people waiting on the best possible price.

>> No.10041762

To clarify, the prices have pushed out most regular people. All the people in this thread annoyingly saying "emulate" are right. That's exactly what people are doing. Or they're just normies satisfied with whatever's on NSO. I still buy games from time to time but not anywhere close to what I used to. Not because I wouldn't like to but simply because I refuse to pay $80 for fucking Mario Kart Double Dash. I'm sure a lot of people are in that same boat. They're just opting out, which shrinks the market.

This isn't the wisest method, but I live near a used game store that accepts cash or credit for trade-ins. I try to sell them something every time I go so I can gauge both how much I have and what I'm looking for. I usually get around $50-$80 in credit for everything I sell, but there was one time where I hit $200 and I got both God Hand and Skies of Arcadia Legends. They've also started accepting Lego sets recently, so I've been selling a few, cashing out for less than I would if I got credit, and just saving the money for other things.
It's a bit of a crackhead way of going about it, and I never know what I'm expecting when I go up there. Still, I've had a few steals in recent memory.

Why do you faggots refuse to believe that there is a sizable market that prefers /vr to modern video games and that it's growing? Yes there's some fuckery going on with graded video games but nobody buys that overpriced garbage and non graded games sell for far less. Some games have always been expensive due to limited print runs, Fire Emblem Path of Radiance was going for near $150 all the way back in gen 7. Chrono Trigger was going for $150-$200 cib in gen 5. The only reason there was a slight drop in price was due to an excess in inventory from people selling shit coupled with low demand in the late 00's. What is even that?
