Who won the Arcade war?

>> No.10036949

Taito

Consumers. Both companies consistently pushed the envelope and produced dozens of fantastic titles because of it.

Now look at them. Sega produces absolute slop like Yakuza, Bandai Namco doesn't produce anything at all.

Konami was unironically ruined by Kojima and MGS. Every classic IP you associate with Konami in the 80-90s was put on halt to fund "important" projects like MGS4/5.

Namco dominated the 80s and did really well in the 90s. They pioneered a lot of things people think Sega was responsible for.
I like both companies though.

I'm a Namco fan myself, despite the (((founder))). Their 80s catalog is like concentrated vidya essence in its purest form. Sega titles always seemed flashier but lacking in soul and creativity by comparison.

Depends. Sega had a small handful of god-tier classics like OutRun and Crazy Taxi. I think they're both great.

To be fair, Konami didn't have that many huge sellers except for MGS and maybe Pro Evolution. Castlevania is a very prestigious series, but most games couldn't surpass the million in sales except for specific titles like SOTN, Lords of Shadow... Guess the same happened with Contra, Goemon, Suikoden, Gradius...

Namco is much more respected in Japan. The thing is that Namco really did not succeed at marketing itself well outside of the Japan, not even on the same level as Capcoml or Konami, despite being far more inventive and influencial.

Commercially, Namco made Pacman, which was the highest grossing arcade game of all time, but it was licensed in the US by Midway; who also produced Mortal Kombat I and II, NBA Jam, Ms. Pacman and Space Invaders. So, I'd say they won.

Sega - depending on what top 10 you go for - barely even makes the top 10. Most are Atari, Midway and Nintendo (Donkey Kong and Street Fighter) games.

That said - in later years Sega arcade games were the ones I probably ended up playing the most (House of the Dead, Crazy Taxi, Sega Rally Championship), but it was very much at a time when arcades were starting to die.

They are very lazy compared to the past.
Nothing new about Tales' future after Arise. Pre-8th gen we had 12 of those for handhelds and a shit ton for the home consoles. Absolute dead desert these days.
Tekken 8 took way too long to come out. I know it's common these days to have one fightan run the format for several years (and i like that, i still really enjoy T7) but having alternative formats would really help out to take off the competitive burden. We had 3 Tekken games for the PSOne, 3 for the PS2, 2 for the PS3 and only one for the PS4.
They made one single Pac-Man remaster and then called it a day for the franchise.
Not a single word about their anime-style games like God Eater, Code Vein or Scarlet Nexus
They got really lazy lately

Unfortunately they are. Square was the last one with a huge line-up covering all areas of the industry (AAA, AA, Indie-like, Smart Phones). But they found their sales to be miserable so it sounds like they are scrapping their AA productions for NFT's. Sega is on a Yakuza trip, Konami still couldn't make their comeback yet and Namco has nothing else going for it outside of Tekken 8 and some licensed Anime games.

okay so maybe the fighters were missing a couple finger gaps. It's been infinitely closer to the arcade version than any 16-bit port of a fighter ever was.
