the 5th and 7th gen were just expermimental generations to prepare and roll the carpets for the 6th and 8th gens respectively. it's why the graphics and piss filters aged like shit and the games run at 10fps at 240p/600p.

6th gen is way more limited than people think. 6th killed off a lot of genres and started the homogenization of video games. This kind of thing is impossible to discuss here though because people who grew up with 6th gen now make up the majority of this board.

I grew up with gen 6 and prefer gen 5 and 7 for my games. haven't dived to deep into gen 3 and 4 but hopefully I can enjoy them too.

3 I can think of are FPS (killed the boomer shooters in favor of cover shooters, and cover shooters weren't as refined as the 7th gen ones. the only good 6th gen console shooters for me were halo and black) and JRPGs (FF went downhill after IX and JRPGs lost that retro charm) and of course horror (RE4 killed classic horror)

JRPG's didn't lose "le retro charm" as you call it, you just haven't played any Gust RPG's on the PS2 because you're a normie who plays Halo, FF and RE. Shooters were pretty mid on 6th gen and RE4 did change the way horror games played going forward, though PS2 does have Silent Hill and Fatal Frame which are good.

It's a great gen, maybe the best, but I honestly still don't consider it retro.
The 6th gen feels like the era where games stopped having any serious limitations and got closer to what we have today. The jump from the fifth gen to the sixth gen was massive not just because of allowing for better graphics, but because of the increase in gameplay depth, """"quality of life"""", amount of content and the overall scope of the games. It's when games truly started to feel massive. That's why PS2 games have a lot more in common with PS3 games than with PS1 games.

Games like Shadow of the Colossus, MonHun2 & Urban Chaos: Riot Response are pretty much just modern games with dated graphics. Many modern gamers could pick up these games today and enjoy them because of how similar they play to modern titles. And you could even argue that many big mainstream titles are still chasing the thunder of games from that era to this very day, like TPS with RE4 or Hack'n'Slash with DMC3.

2nd gen is full of classic arcade-style games (frogger, digdug, outrun). Where I live in bongland we have a pretty great arcade 10 mins away (arcade club Bury). If you're ever in bongland it's worth the trip.

the 6th is the best, but it's probably the least 2D generation of all (unless we include the GBA).
I understand that because of that some prefer the 4-5th, and after the 7th with the explosion of independent developers.
