The art direction is great and the storyline interesting enough, but I just can seem to manage to have any sort of actual fun with this game; way too rigid in structure to all its supposed freedom and flexibility in managing your units.

Had it been something more breezier and open with field-stuff to do like a Shining Force 2 for example it could have been, indeed, amazing.

They are completely different though. Simulation RPG (a là Tactis Ogre) vs something akin to an RTS (a la Ogre Battle).

>> No.10030969

I've had this game for over 10 years and I never played it. I never took it out of the plastic case, it's been in my drawer since I bought it more than a decade ago.

I've considered playing it a few times but I heard it's such an immense time sink both to learn and to play it, which discourages me.

Tactics Ogre and FFT are tactical rpgs (trpg). A simulation rpg would be something like Fire Emblem or Shining Force

Filtered. Fire emblem doesn't even give you that. It's kinda standard for the genre

What is fire emblem simulating that tactics ogre isn't? What tactics are in fft and tactics ogre that is missing from shining force? This doesn't make sense

I just can't decide which version of FFT to play.
On one hand I much prefer PS1's art to the PSP version and it'll probably look even better on a CRT. Apparently it doesn't have the same framerate issues as the PSP port.
On the other hand PSP supposedly has a better written translation with nicer prose, and I generally enjoy playing JRPGs on handhelds more.
Which translation is more true to the original Japanese script?
Is the new content in WotL actually worthwhile or is it a case of them forcing in new content that doesn't really fit just to make it an easier sell to people who already played the first game?

If you want the original PS1 game with the content of the PSP version get the "The Lion War of the Lions" hack for the PS1 version. It's a hack of a hack called "The Lion War" but that one doesn't have the PSP translation so don't mix the two up.
Some of the new content in the PSP version expands on existing characters and is much welcomed since they don't have any importance to the story after being recruited in the PS1 version but there's also stuff like rendezvous which is just fun side content you can do to get strong items. Overall I'd say the new content is worth playing.

I always loved Mustadio and kept him as a main party member as soon as you pick him up and at least in the original he gets to be part of the Construct 8 plotline in Chapter 4.

It's more efficient with 3 dancers 2 mimes, and the mimes can be your males so Ramza is allowed in the party. Every dance happens 3 times and you have 3 dancers doing them, so 9 dances a turn, just shredding the enemy's Speed in no time.

>On the other hand PSP supposedly has a better written translation with nicer prose,
That is extremely a matter of opinion. The retranslation fixed some errors and some confusing parts that didn't translate well, but it took liberties by leaning very hard into cumbersome, heavily artificial olde english. I, personally, was not a fan.
>Which translation is more true to the original Japanese script?
The original translation is much more literal, for better or worse, so it is more authentic but has the occasional issues.
