The only one I've played is the Arc the Lad Collection and I enjoyed it. Arc 2 in particular has a very dark story, and the translation's humor gave it kind of a sardonic quality that I didn't expect from a JRPG at the time.

It works best in the games that were originally too dry. Vay and Albert Odyssey were paint by numbers RPGs that didn't have much going for them. Albert Odyssey looked nice but that's about it. Punching them up helped give them something close to character. The Lunars weren't as bad as people made them out to be since the main dialogue was pretty consistent with the Japanese and they only went off the rails for the occasional NPC.
