The maps are beautiful and play decently, but the weapons feel all over the place. I kind of wish the original Quake arsenal weren't present and it just focused on the magic stuff, there's little reason for the shotgun or default axe to exist for example when the wand has infinite ammo, a charge shot mechanic, and light utility. I don't know what the fuck is even going on with the slot assignments, they make no sense whatsoever.

Vkquake. Running into some weird save/load hangups, otherwise been running fine.
Going back and forth between the wands and shotguns is real fucking fun, it's great how it recharges while stowed. But the wand use and respawning ammo boxes give me the impression there will be too much ammo, that and not knowing the impulses are my few grips at the time because it's great otherwise.

I found the other two MEGA folders lacking in terms of content and organization so I've been putting together one and trying to cram it full of stuff in an attempt to make it a one stop shop for 99% of anons, so it includes separately packaged archives of game assets (like WADs, GRPs, PAKs, and such) for source port users, offline installers for GOG releases, soundtracks freshly encoded in Vorbis for all games that had CDDA music, and ROMs/images for interesting console ports like PSX Doom, Doom 64, and Duke Nukem 64.
I also wanna write some informative READMEs for newcomers to games that need it (like anything that requires a source port or can be modded) but I haven't gotten around to that yet.
It has a lot of games in it at the moment, much more than any one other folder in the OP right now, although I've excluded shitty games, for the sake of preserving the limited space I have on a free account. I think what I might do is make another account that is only for the GOG installers, to serve as a sort of a mirror for them. So I guess I should be asking, seeing as there's already a bunch of stuff like this in the OP, is this of interest to anyone?

This is my first map ever and i wasn't sure what to do about most rooms so i just threw a bunch of different monsters around. Make sure to infight enemies to not run out of ammo. That's EDay finished. The Icon can kill himself with his own fire breath somehow. And this isn't a fault of Deathstrider, but if anyone else plays EDay and gets the Tree of Inifuss mission on Peak of the Gods, this is where it spawns. Because a TorchTree is way the fuck out of map boundaries for some reason.

No idea what to play next with this. Maybe Heretic. Also heavily considering making a Project Malice patch to replace some enemies on Unloved, and a PM+Deathstrider patch for Darkmoon. That sounds like a cool combo.

Does/Did the scythe have anything like that? Probably wouldn't be super appropriate for it to heal you, but something with stamina on soul collection might be neat. Like a shortened delay before it regenerates. Or better stamina regen the more soul juice it has, when you're using it.

Well, a piece of him. And you have said Solomon is more neutral good. It makes sense that the fragments would end up with their own personalities along with their own names.

I haven't thought about it. If the canon is that the knife itself is magical, yes. The alternative is that its powers come from the trapped cunt within, so if she doesn't like you, best you can do is cut a loaf of bread with it. I'm far more inclined to go with that because it's marginally more interesting.

Not really. The scythe came much, much later and was never meant to have any deep lore, nor was its function defined clearly. Most of the development in that regard is recent. Knife on the other hand has existed for a long time under the form of an addon for HD. As such, I've had a lot of time to go over different iterations of origins and effects, which is why it's more refined. I will probably improve the Harbinger at some point. Just need to play the mod. A man can dream...

Campbell's condensed soup, as some friends like to joke. It's a quasi-magical fluid that sorta kinda powers Solomon's canned bones, hence the strength loss and slower stamina regen when you lose it. As for its ties to the Black Death, it really doesn't have much deeper meaning other than

which is still mostly just a leftover from the HD iteration where you actually had real blood. It doesn't make too much sense here when you think about it, but that's precisely why I don't burden myself with making the gameplay adhere strictly to the lore. Like I said elsewhere, lore in DS is supposed to provide context first and foremost, not technical info (unless that's important to context). Strictly technical lore reads like an academic paper and blows five layers of ass. Fuck that.

Almost done with Mjolnir and I'm really not sure how to feel about it. The scope and scale is impressive, but the quality seems to vary wildly even within the same level. Texture scaling, and geometric detail for stuff like arches, rocks, and columns is all over the place. You have MDL statues that look like they should be the player's height at most scaled up to like 20 meters. You've also got custom weapon models like that mace that are somehow fuglier than the morningstar that was cut from DOE (which looks even more hilariously bad when switch between it and the Violent Rumble Mjolnir with its corrected UVs and added detail). The heavy use of MDL props had also lead to extremely inconsistent collision.

Gameplay is kinda all over the place too. Splitting the DOE ammo types into fully separate weapons seems really dumb with how many other weapons have already been added. A lot of the powerups are weird, incomprehensible, or outright redundant (this was a Drake problem too). I don't see why I would use any melee weapon other than the vampiric mace, which you can take from the start level. The flak gun is ironically pretty bad unless you hit an enemy directly. There are random swarms of murderous bees sitting on the ground in a couple levels that you aren't supposed to kill if you want Thor's blessing... which itself isn't explained (I guess it just saves you from dying once?). Gremlins move faster without their animation actually being sped up, which looks dumb and makes them walk into walls since they can't turn as often. A few enemy variants aren't visually distinct enough to warrant how different their attacks are (i.e. the Wrath that attacks like an Archvile).

I like it overall, but the smaller, more focused levels are so much more fun than the fuckhuge ones that they hyped up.

The first few areas where you needed to make infights don't really work, because the map is entirely comprised of cramped rooms with unexpected sharp corners, and the player can't run free to dodge projectiles properly, I always get blocked in by enemies when trying to run around them to make them infight, and standing in the openings doesn't always line them up to infight.
Give up the infighting gimmick and give the player what he needs, earlier SSG and Rocket Launcher. Replacing one of the secrets to have a Plasma Rifle which gives you 40 cells, instead of plain 40 cells would open up more combat possibilities too.

After the SSG area the map plays pleasantly despite me dying, I wouldn't change anything after that point.

I think the SSG is fine but i will change the rocket launcher to be in front of the first switch. As for the big room, i will probably remove the PE and maybe some other monster because when i tested i knew there were some extra monsters waiting to ambush near the switch so i just avoided going there but a normal player wont know that and will probably trigger it while getting enemies to infight and collecting items around the room.
As for ammo/secrets, was there enough/were they too obtuse to find without the computer map?

A few things.
When spells tell you to target yourself, try and picture your spell circle as the physical aiming reticle for your spellcasting. There's no extra button for it, you just have to aim at yourself with it to actually do the action. It's easier by just aiming at your feet, even if you can't see them. Funfact, you can apply this to enemies as well, where applicable, just don't try to put a high level shield onto an enemy if you don't want to suffer.
Pressing F1 in any menu gives you the info for how it works, even if it isn't in the manual. Useful if you're talking to your merchant companion but forgot how to actually buy stuff from him.
There is never such a thing as Overkill. Ammunition costs scale and are higher the more you buy of it, try to diversify to mitigate this.

I thought this was a net positive gameplaywise and didn't think it looked dumb but I can see why one would. I have never gotten robbed by gremlins after the first time it happened to me way back when I played the mission packs. In Mjolnir I've been thrown off a LOT, not because I'm not used to their speed, but because they close in on me when I'm distracted by other enemies. Gremlin sped up = good for gameplay.

Having a lot of fun with mjolnir so far, but there has been two or three cases so far where i've performed some actions seemingly out of order, or skipped a section of a level (pic related), because the mace is so kick-ass with its air-acceleration.
I love the movement using the mace, but its not clear to me whether the skips using it are intended.

Hexen was made for MS-DOS, not Windows, and cannot played natively on modern systems. The Steam release of Hexen that you're playing is using DOSBox, which is an emulator. If you'd like to play the game natively and have a more pleasant experience, then you should use a source port, which is essentially a re-implementation of the game for systems other than DOS (so, a port), which takes advantage of modern hardware and often comes with enhancements. Source ports still need you to provide the game's content, and in the case of Doom engine games like Hexen, this is just hexen.wad. Hardcore Sam fan here. Serious Sam 3 has a lot of soul but Croteam lacked confidence in just making a Sam game so they bogged it down in stupid underground sections and the pitifully slow first few maps, which still have some good fights like the end of map 1, map 2, and map 3. Map 4 with all the street kleer battles is when Sam begins to show its true face, and from A Silent Riddler on, besides the underground sections, Sam 3 is a true Serious Sam experience. I definitely think if you dislike 3 you should revisit it because it's a great game when it IS one if that makes sense. 4 is...good and I can say a lot about it but 4 is far away from being a tech demo. It just didn't have a lot of heart no doubt due to Serious Engine 4 problems and Alen Ladevac leaving, one of the founders of Croteam.

I had a longer post but specifically taking Sam 3 into account relative to the classics, what makes 3 a true sam experience is when you have multiple enemy types in play and juggling each one's projectiles, judging when kleers will get to you so you can efficiently one shot them, managing this horde of enemies so you don't die. I never really turn my brain off when I'm playing tfe, tse, 2, or 3 the same way I do other games because enemies are faster than in other shooters of the same type, so you're always wondering who's closest to you, which one is gonna fire a projectile, and minding where the health pickups are.

I will pump the brakes and say I do enjoy the indoor sections of TFE and TSE and can be part of the Sam experience, and the indoor parts of 3 COULD have been good but they made them bad instead for some reason.

TBPF 3 suffers from being followed by 4, if that makes sense. Sam 2 was so tonally different from the original, and 3 was different again in the opposite direction, so it makes for an interestingly varied trilogy.
But then 4 comes along and is... more of 3? On its own it was a novel change of pace, now it's retroactively the start of a trend. Towards normalcy, at that. It makes perfect sense to me. Conceptually it is his blood even if it's not literal. And sometimes vampires drink blood as a way to feed off of people's souls in more supernatural settings, while the Essence item lore says it has soul energy in it. Also a fan of vampires.

It was objectively THE worst weapon I've ever had the displeasure of adding because of the Blender workflow required to do the animations and hands correctly, not to mention the raw amount of trial and error for lack of better ways. I also have exactly 0 kills with it cause I couldn't find the damn thing back when spawns existed, and I tend to play F&S these days, so I can't buy it either. Played it just fine many years ago after Hexen and even Hexen 2 and never felt that it's as bad as you say.

It's great for rounding the corner on imps and hitscanners without spending ammo, does enough damage to oneshot without mouse flicks and can hit multiple targets instead of leaving the shotgunner behind the imp alive. The inputs to keep swinging and flick the mouse hard enough to kill a hell knight in 2 swings before it can throw a fireball are a little tight, and sometimes it loses to the fists from not having 100% pain chance
I guess it doesn't have a lot of wow for a 3k license weapon, maybe it could do with more lenient mouse control to get a better swing arc

Vampires, the way I see them, are always creatures of extremely high free will. Even if you program one, unless you make it have the mental capacity of the average redditor, you will run into obedience issues sooner or later. Obviously the Black Death isn't programmed like that because you can't take out someone as old as Solomon without gifting your weapon with extreme intelligence and the freedom to make important choices, which for all intents and purposes constitutes free will. The problem here arises when she is biologically hardwired to kill, which is in direct conflict with her conscious desires. I imagine it is an agonizing psychological torture for her. It also raises some questions, both for her character and Solomon's. He could put her out of her misery, but doing so would be a great personal loss to him. On the other hand, she struggles entirely on her own volition. I suppose taking her out for a spin and feeding her more or less eases her mental anguish by scratching the itch to slice and dice. However, doing so is morally evil because you're essentially supporting your own destroyer, not to mentioning fueling a genocide machine with hundreds of millions of kills to its name.
As for the knife telekinetics, only to a limited degree. She can move the knife but it takes a strong desire to do so. Like, say, petting it, which she absolutely fucking hates. It's the sheer hatred that gives her the power to stab you in response. Petting her is Solomon's way of doing a little trolling. Just friendly banter! Ouch.

The combo doesn't require perfect timing. You can hold the other button before the animation finishes and it will automatically switch. It's intentionally difficult to pull off because if you swing around like a lunatic you can turn an entire horde into mush. We're talking ~300 damage per 360 degree swing. Without zerk.

When I first began making maps I was using slade just because I didn't know doombuilder existed. The written tutorial I was using recommended slade because the author was on linux, which I find funny looking back because I think I was on windows.
Various problems compared to UDB: Slade would often crash when I ctrl+z repeatedly, it doesn't allow you to copy+paste things/lines/sectors, it doesn't display the rotations of things in 3dmode, it doesn't allow you to split lines in half with a single keybind, It doesn't allow you to toggle between sky rendering modes or real/transfered light level display, there's no bridge mode, stairbuilder, bridgebuilder, curve mode, sound propogation mode, automap mode, visplane explorer or tag range function, it doesn't allow you to independently auto align textures by x/y offset, it doesn't allow you to offset textures with mouse movement (this can be useful for making offsets roughly random), it doesn't display exactly what things are in the 2d mode, in general it requires you to click more times to do actions that UDB does with fewer. This becomes increasingly annoying the more you make maps.
The features I listed are only the those that I personally find most useful, there are probably many more. It's been a while since I used it so some may have since been added, but I doubt as many as UDB. I think it makes sense each program would do best when specializing, the whole of doom modding is really varied, and Slade is still an invaluable tool in it's own way. If I were developing it I would have surely abandoned the map editor by now. The only problem I have with UDB in comparison is that it's often overzealous unjoining noncontinuous sectors when I'm really just trying to move around or reshape them. DoombuilderX is better in that respect but no way otherwise. Certainly, if anyone is new to mapping and even unable to understand half the shit I just listed, I'd still point them to UDB first for its intuitiveness.

That hardwiring is something I was thinking about a little bit ago. So her creators probably programmed her to get a dose of feel good chemicals whenever she kills a fragment, to incentivize her to keep doing it to ensure the job actually gets done. Only they didn't actually consider her killing anything else so they weren't that specific, so she gets them whenever she kills pretty much anything. Does that sound about right?

I don't consider the feelgood an explicit part of the programming. More like it's something she developed on her own over time due to nature, so basically a side effect. She's sadistic by design in order to do her job efficiently. It makes sense that she'd carelessly disregard the life of anything and everything in order to achieve her goal. I'm also working on part 5, despite saying pt. 4 was the last one. This conversation has sparked some good questions/answers that I feel I need to canonize properly. I've been wanting to rip off Quake E4's secret exit for a while by making the player lock themselves out of the secret exit by using a key in the "wrong" place.
Alternatively, just make the normal exit condition (switch, key, w/e) also open a hidden arena with an extra tough fight in it.
And if you need ideas for a tough battles, then just fucking steal something from a WAD you like. Or try to improve something you didn't like that you've played before.

Ah I see. Yeah, a ".zs script" is nothing but a regular zs file, so even an actor - i.e. a decoration, monster or weapon - can be put in a zs file.
That section about structuring your project is more of a general programmer thing because it allows you to use an editor of your choice instead of doing everything in SLADE.
The setback here is that you also need to heed this structure when testing and such, whereas with a pk3 you just run it in SLADE.
I personally always work inside the pk3. Graphics editing and sounds and such obviously need their own external programs, but the project itself is in SLADE.

I've found that having less than 5 cards tends to be boring, while having more than 10-15 gets kind of ridiculous. So on standard mode it takes until halfway through a megawad for things to get interesting.
Plus I wish there was a way to cancel cards since getting stuck with a bad card/combo might ruin the playthrough.

It should really have a mode where you draw a "permanent" card every map, but with a cap of 10 so after the 10th card each next card replaces an old one of your choosing.

100 revive attempts near you. Note that these attempts don't have to be successful, just that they are attempted This can be into corpses that can't be revived easily once damaged so you can cheese it with grenades and fire into rev/hell knight corpses or abuse it to get a shitload of ammo off a few zombiemen. It's distance based around you in a somewhat small radius so you can segment yourself to an specific area of the map after killing a vile and drag a few corpses to grind and get said ammo.

Honestly the way its implemented makes me want to snore compared to how old archviles were and how you could scare them away entirely and avoid triggering the curse.

Infighting already syncs and chains and it's fine usually, the issue is that adding a chance to have enemies take vengeance for demon-on-demon kills basically doesn't have a nice happy medium point where it's useful but not overwhelming. Anything under about a ~10% chance doesn't do much at all that infighting doesn't already do, but once you breach that number it suddenly turns every mixed demon fight into a clown fiesta. I even tried making it so that vengeance procs had limiter numbers (can only incite 3 demons to take revenge, for instance), but all that does is make the percentage where it does virtually nothing a bit higher.
This feels a lot like when I did some dumb stuff in early versions to make humans try to take cover after firing and it just ended up being really annoying and counter to fun gameplay.
I might use a version of this effect on the invis sphere though, could be interesting if it gave you a chance to make enemies target other enemies near you instead of you by accident. Not sure if it's practical though.

Yeah I noticed that a little while back with a different mapset where about 50 imps just instantly shitcanned a mastermind for looking at them wrong. It's not really an issue in terms of "oh no the player can't clear the horde because it's too hard" but instead it's often "This map was literally designed under the assumption that you would not be killing everything yourself so there is only enough ammo to kill 70% of the monsters". The worst possible thing is being ammo-cucked and I did everything in my power to ensure it doesn't happen, but this is an edge case.
I'm thinking that I might just have to make it so that, specifically for the cyberdemon and mastermind, enemies have a chance to just forget about shooting them and go back to normal behavior.

I'm only familiar with Ion Fury and in hindsight it seemed pretty similar to Blood at times (I played Fresh Supply after IF), but I guess that was more about my playstyle with excessive safescumming and Maximum Fury difficulty. Then they actually win the fight by a mile because they can stunlock him. I'm just gonna see if disabling syncing and chaining onto bosses works. This is really only an issue with them, when it comes to other enemies it's almost always okay. Kinda funny to see groups of imps coordinate to take down barons and stuff but not game-breaking.

I think Nightdive are fine, and frankly we're pretty lucky to have them. No because MIDI doesn't contain any actual samples. IIRC Genesis uses some channels for actual midi-like interpreters and some others for samples that the composer added in, kinda like how Module music is half-instructions, half-samples, merged into a single file. The closest you can get is having the actual music be recreated in MIDI with a soundfont that replicates the YM2612 and even that can be finnicky of itself because the genesis soundchip is so much different to the SC-55 that most Doom midis are composed for.

Think of MIDI in this context basically as sheet music that gets played back by a computer. Since you've used a "converter" that ignores instrument data presnet in your VGM file, you've gotta manually use a MIDI sequencer to mark each track as the proper instrument.
