How would (You) replicate the SOVL of NES Castlevanias in 3D? Is it even possible?

I don't think precision hard platforming exist in 3D other than maybe Mario 64? but it's a totally different approach.
CV64 was a decent approach but still not quite, then on PS2 they went full DMC, ditching the platforming.

Of course: HD-2D.

All the N64 games needed to be Castlevania-like was to be more Tomb Raider-like

I always thought Dark Souls was basically Castlevania but in 3D. You had long treks through grim/gothic environments filled with monsters, plus a playstyle that forced you to be cautious and precise in your approaches to enemies instead of just whaling on the attack button. You even kinda get subweapons.

I've said this before in /vr/ though and a couple guys said I was retarded in response, so I am guessing not everyone sees the parallels between both games in the same fashion that I do.

what? have you played lament of innocence? the combat mechanics are nothing like dmc, and it has tons of platforming.

Like most from software games the difficulty comes from the shit controls then getting use to them. On the other hand, castlevania has good responsive controls and not hard in the same sense like other good 2D games of the era.

Not a Souls fag, but yea Demons Soul seemed to capture a good feel of a 3D Castlevania for me, though maybe less rpg mechanics. Never played past that one so idk how the open world nature of the later ones impacted that feel.

I haven't played II or III, but while DS1 is "open world" but it's not that large and it's all interconnected set-pieces. Very "video game", in a good way.

Couldn't Devil May Cry with a few minor tweaks be Castlevania 3D? I guess the emphasis is one combat and not platforming or exploration but whatever.

Interesting, i will have to try it. Maybe it will feel like a proper 2/sotn equivalent to Demons equivalent to 1/3/rondo.

Bloodbourne is the obvious choice for 3D Castlevania, I think all the Souls games have an upgradeable whip, too. The only thing that stops it from being perfect is that all battle music (including Souls/Elden Ring) is bombastic orchestral bullshit.

You have basically just described Lament of Innocence, which in addition to being the series prequel and origin of Dracula, is simply a rad kino PS2 game with a great soundtrack.

I guess they've never really tried to adapt classic CV's linear platforming levels to 3d and instead focused on action. When I try to picture what it would look like I just end up with a slower, high-commitment version of Crash Bandicoot with SCIV style whip-swinging.

>>10015490
>I don't think precision hard platforming exist in 3D
There's the more platforming-heavy segments of Tomb Raider, but even those are pretty short

>>10015607
Bloodborne with a jump button would be a good template for a modern reboot.

>>10015929
Sens Fortress in particular is very gamey with the constant deathtraps and swinging axes. It gives me more DnD dungeon vibes but it could be right out of Castlevania too.

>> No.10017956

>>10016319
He's talking about a 3d game, not a 2d game with 3d graphics. And I don't think Bloodstained did the latter that well. The hit boxes feel all sorts of fucked up. The Curse of the Moon games were both excellent though.

>> No.10017970

This is exactly what I thought the first time I played DS1. The whole time playing it you felt like this is what 3D Castlevania should have been.

>> No.10018325

>>10015607
I agree to an extent, but there's far too much customization and variables in Dark Souls, not saying it's bad thing, but it definitely strays away from the simplicity of classicvania where its just you, your whip and some sub-weapon
also enemies take too long to die in Dark Souls lol

>> No.10018378

>>10015607
there's definitely parallels but the priority on grounded combat just feels off, a fighting game would feel closer to darksouls than castlevania.

>> No.10018406

>>10017970
I don't think it can really be a CV successor without platforming, but it does nail the deliberate pacing and requiring you to commit to your actions, at least until it went full rollspam.

how well this doom wad captures classicvania makes me think that a good 3d translation would have been closer to a shooter than a z-targeting melee game at least in terms of base gameplay. so much of those games is focused on things coming at you in the air diagonally whereas the vast majority of interaction in DS is limited to essentially a flat axis.

I thought the PS2 games were the best approach for a 3D Castlevania. Shame that the level design was so poor or non-existent.
>>10015607
You'd be right. The only thing that doesn't quite fit would be the lack of platforming but even then there are some jumps which require a good bit of precision and timing. I don't think Miyazaki has ever mentioned Castlevania but I wouldn't have been surprised if it had been at least partly an influence.
