Just bought FFIII from ebay, it was like $39 delivered. Cart only, no manual. Never played FF before at all but i read a little and 3 is apparently the best mix of 'Good' and 'Affordable' on SNES.

Just wanna know everyone's take on the combat when encountering monsters. I feel like it really detracts from the experience to be walking around enjoying the scenery or graphics when BOOM you randomly encounter an enemy and the screen cuts to a different scene and you fight. I'm not very far into the game, maybe it gets more comfortable.

Also, any tips for streamlining combat turn settings?

Plus the fight music is pretty annoying.

So... just like every FF until 11?

Also VI is fun but far too easy, and it can be broken in many ways.

To be fair, he did say he never played Final Fantasy before. Although I would think one would be familiar with the idea of random battles by now.

First time playing an RPG...?

Honestly, I wouldn't have recommended this game as your first RPG. Probably should've started a bit lighter with Chrono Trigger or something.

>> No.1001297

That's not FFIII, that's FFVI.

>> No.1001308

OP, I'm guessing it's your first time playing RPGs?

>>1001295
I agree with this guy. CT also doesn't cut to battle scenes like that either, though you're going to have to get used to that if you want to play RPGs, as a lot of them do it.

play super mario RPG for the snes.

well tehcnically chrono trigger doesn't have random encounters but ..... come on guys you can't avoid alot of those but agreed it's better entry RPG then FFVI. If you have your heart set on Final Fantasy maybe you should play IV first

OP here, I knew what to expect but actually playing it is another thing.

Combat is obviously a huge part of the game and for that reason I would expect it to be integrated little better. It just seems so... separate from everything else in the game.

And talk about repetitive, you can't walk through the desert without encountering giant scorpions or some shit every 15 seconds.

>1001295
I've been scoping out Chrono Trigger on ebay but don't feel like shelling $80 for it. I really loved Link to The Past.

Just get it for DS, on the VC, or emulate.

Random encounters are always jarring at first, lol. I remember that I used to flinch every time one happened when I played FFVII, but now I don't even move when it happens. After you've played this kind of game a lot more, you get used to it to the point where it's not a problem at all.

I've been into JRPGs since 1997, and have played many since, and random encounters just feel like they're part of a game's "flow" to me at this point. And games like Chrono Trigger with set encounters or Parasite Eve and it's "hot spots" (areas where random encounters can happen, vs areas were they don't) just feel like a pain in the ass. I feel like I have to do more work to grind a little, and the games feel empty at times.

I think this is the reason a lot of people are turned off by JRPGs now. They startle the fuck out of you and pull you out of your mind frame for random fights, while WRPGs have set encounters in the same engine. It seems more attractive to some, but I prefer the JRPG way (for reasons beyond encounter types, but that's another topic...).

I don't know OP. I say stick with it, but only you can make that decision for yourself in the end. FFVI is one of the best SNES RPGs, as well as being like the third best FF. So it IS worth it to stick with it.

Come on man, it's just a guy who's new to RPGs.

>> No.1001406

If you're THAT new to Final Fantasy, just stay away from the series. It's cancer if you find the music and way you encounter enemies to be distracting and annoying.

Final Fantasy 3/6 Is a god awful entry to JRPGS, especially if you're coming in as a newbie who wasn't around when these games were popular. There are no ways to "deal" with the random battles in early JRPGS like FF6, I would say perhaps jump ship to a JRPG series that doesn't feature random battles if it does become too bothersome.

Flea Market going on right now in my town.

One guy there has Final Fantasy III.

Just the cartridge for $80.

Where do people get off?

I think JPRGs are not for you.

Are there any ways to make combat faster then? Like settings that skip redundant steps, or a way to not have to button through my HP and GP gains after the fight?

>> No.1002972

You can make text speed faster

>> No.1003098

In WoR you can find an accessory for Mog in the Narshe cave to disable random encounters, but that's pretty late. There's a ward bangle you can get earlier but that decreases by like only 20%.

Or you can keep resetting the step counter by going into the menu and out, but that's tedious. Get a gameshark?

>> No.1003119

>>1002883
You can set the battle speed in the options menu, but I think that's really only going to make the game harder.

>> No.1003776

OP, i recently got this game as well in a SNES bundle with Chrono trigger and FF4 for $135.

It honestly gets better as the game goes one, its doesn't ease you into it well.

Maybe you should have played it in an emulator for 5 minutes before buying it.
But yeah, It should get better, I'm not the biggest fan of random battles, but if you hate them, you kinda miss the point.
FFVI has a r something new to try or experiment with, but most people end up mashing A until the battle is over, which is pretty boring.
