If it weren't for the FMV, FFVII could have easily fit onto a single PS1 disc.

Cloud, Barret and Tifa break into Shinra HQ, mowing down tons of guards in the process and somehow the employees on the upper floors carry on like they don't know anything is going on. Even the top execs have their meeting completely undeterred. What's the deal here, is Shinra just that ignorant? Are terrorist attacks a commonplace event in that building?

Anything outside of battle = shit graphics.
Sorry it's not 1997 anymore and I don't care about sub DVD quality FMV.
Story is retarded too.
Cool themes and world, decent characters and great character designs. Decent pacing for a JRPG too. But it looks like shit and the story is retarded.

I remember when it came out thinking it looked like shit compared to FFVI. The prerendered backdrops were impressive but the polygonal sprites struck me as extremely crude even then. Also, the difficulty was dialed down to where the game offered no challenge. I first played it on a rented PS1 with no memory card so I couldn't save and left the game running for two days before I finally died which was well outside Midgard.

The only thing that aged badly about it was the graphics outside of the battles and it aged no worse than most other ps1 rpgs. If you’re trying to make a big deal about ffvii specifically aging badly you are either retarded or looking for attention.

Honestly I think the field models could've looked fine with a little more refinement. Like making their arms wider and making the NPCs less...orange.

10006372

I used to think I hated games that didn't put their primary emphasis on moment to moment gameplay but in recent years I've found myself enjoying genres like survival horror or non combat oriented adventure games where the gameplay might be weak but the atmosphere and narrative still keep me invested, yet I still find it hard to go back to turn based combat, why?

>> No.10006498

>>10006372
Because games with turn based combat tend to severely limit the possible interactions you have with the world, instead of deepening them like they ought to.

Instead of gaining fire powers, and then actually being able to use them in the world to light stuff up, you're limited to selecting 'fire attack' from a menu to just do damage to some target that may or may not be "weak to fire" and that's it, otherwise you walk around and press [ACTION]. You get a hundred different things that just aren't interesting and don't matter.

I got to around the first visit to Gold Saucer both of the times but just didn't really get into it. Decided to push through this time and got really "rewarded" quickly after and finished the game in a few days.
Same thing happened with BoF3 to me.
