The Famicom was somewhat based on it. Things could have gone very differently if the Coleco Adam disaster didn't happen.

>> No.9993289

Atari 2600, 5200 and 7800 can do stuff the nes can't. Astrocade had pretty close to arcade hardware but the roms were too small to make good use of it. The super cassette vision was also technically much better than famicom in sprites but weaker in backgrounds, don't know if its after.

Also possible on the NES. Not to the same degree, but necessary to do certain things.

And by madman you mean someone who has at least a basic grasp of how things work below a tile editor, right?

Atari 2600's video output is entirely controlled by the program, down to such structural things like refresh rate and line count. It is absolutely impossible to alter those on NES as it has a fixed size frame buffer.

1st gen is like an enhanced 60s party game with overlays and accessories.
2nd gen has some great stuff from Midway, Atari, Sega, Taito, Nintendo, and Namco among others.
Ms. Pac-Man is a good example of a refined 2nd gen game - fast, polished, fun to play and a notable improvement over the original.
The early generations are interesting because they slowly introduce core concepts so elementary to what a video game is that they are easy to miss to someone used to the complexity of newer games.

I was born in the 90s and I can recognise that there are good 2600 games.

H.E.R.O, Frogs and Flies, Pitfall, Adventure, Combat, and a bunch of others.

They're still charming and fun today. It's just a different mindset to today. You weren't dedicating 20 hours of your life to the games. They're little fun games that you play for 10-20 minutes and then move on. Or some of them you can spend more time trying to get a high score, or you can play them with friends. They're not advanced. Most of them are like arcade games, just play for as long as you can. But some of them are the stepping stones to gaming as we think of it today.

Am I playing Atari every day or any other console like it? Nope. But every now and then it's fun to boot up Stella and try some random game I've never played before for 10 minutes and then move on to something else.

You're just close minded.

Coleco and Nintendo had some deals in early 80s and at one point NoA execs informed Coleco that they were going to make their own console soon. Nintendo was fully aware of ColecoVision and probably used it as a specs goal to surpass.

You can enjoy things that aren't good but are at least interesting you know... I feel like we might as well throw out most of literature too while we're at it. There's a lot of books that never made it to "classic" status from the 1800s that still have relevance for their historical value, and or influence on what came after. These early video games are the same. (and only take a few minutes to play to give you a "huh, that was neat" and move on without wasting much of your time)

This is a young medium, eventually a fair chunk of the medium will have nobody to be nostalgic about it, and we will have a different discussion then.

The Intellevision controllers were of similar design but far lower quality and it shows.

Colecovision Controllers are indeed quite durable. I've never seen overt complaining about one breaking.
Intellivision controllers, I'm sure they are at least slightly behind in terms of durability on average in comparison to the Colecovision and Channel F's respective controllers. This is especially the hardwired model I controllers, I think. Still more durable than the 5200 Supersystem weak rubber boot-based controllers, as well as most Odyssey 2 controllers.

Megamania on Atari 2600 is legit a better game than dozens and dozens of shumps that have come after it. Has multiple levels, fun challenge, and the OG enterprise for your ship type as a nod to Galaga having an Xwing (IMO)
