Some people view games as a medium of art, so it's no surprise that they want to preserve it. People do the same thing for other mediums, like film, music, painting, etc. A huge portion of films made before the 1940's are gone forever because of a lack of interest in preservation. We know about them through promotional materials and records, but the films themselves were destroyed over the years.
It really is a shame and that's why people, understandably, feel disgust towards those who just want to horde.

the funniest part of all of this to me is that if these autists trying to preserve things actually wanted to succeed, they'd open up their cool kid club to everyone and run a public collection pool via patreon or something. more people involved, more funds collected, higher chance of success.
