Yeah, Doomguy and Doom3guy are just dudes, humans, but who happen to be excellent warriors with determination. Sure, they can punch a zombie so hard he explodes, but not by default, they need something to help them be able to do that for a limited time.

Based on how combative you are out of the gate, I'm assuming that you're some manner of unbearable faggot. Melody is core of what makes good music which leaves an impression, so I can see why people are drawn to music from an era where games typically can't rely on flashy (often pre-made and licensed) samples and thus have to do the best within their means to actually be good.

Moody, atmospheric, and even slow music is definitely something you can find in videogames, even ones using chiptunes and MIDI.

Castlevania:

https://youtu.be/zOHBWedfkSg
https://youtu.be/GgecZ6UKZOE

This series trends mostly towards faster paced tracks, but there's some which are somewhat slower tempo and more moody or somber.

Splatterhouse:

Many are somewhat short, but that's because the stages and events themselves are. The third game is about running an incredibly tight race against the clock to save your wife and son, the player is incredibly strong, but they aren't, and it's actually pretty hard to save either of them, let alone both (which is possible). The music being stressful fits this very well I think, and the more mournful tracks for not making it I think work well.

Doom:

More famous for ripping off rock and metal, this series actually has its share of original music, some which is very slow and oppressive, really selling you being alone against the horrors in the dark.

For many years I only cared about Doom. The thing is, I loved it for the atmosphere, feeling of odds stacked against you. But now franchise took completely different direction, which I didn't like and gradually lost interest.
Thus I decided to finally try Quake. Damn I regret not doing this earlier. Gameplay's a bit weaker, but oh my, that atmosphere. Being stuck in those hostile dimensions alone. Exactly up my alley.
Going through Scourge of Armagon now. OST is weaker compared to Reznor's stuff in original, but levels themselves are awesome.

I love HD but the bleed is the only thing I disable, and I'm usually pretty lenient with encumbrance. I'll also mess around with frag shards/respawn rates a bit.

>How come these droning newfags so fundamentally misunderstand a core principle of classic DOOM? You are most certainly not some superhero blasting effortlessly through the demonic hordes, in fact, i always understood the game as presenting the demons as a very significant, chaotic threat, and the game is thus a constant scraping for health and ammo while the demons roam around, grunting menacingly in your ears.
I think it's actually somewhere inbetween, you are alone and scraping by, and the demons are threats, and everything is fucked, but you're also badass who can do this shit.

Think about it, Doomguy can carry so much ordnance on him, and he can run and strafe like a madcunt, even when he's scraping by for resources, he's real fast and agile, he's also strong, to the point that some sci-fi steroid injections can make him punch a man so hard that he fucking explodes.
Plutonia would be a great exemplar of this, where the odds are really stacked against you, but since you're bad motherfucker (as in, good at the game), you can see it through to the other side and best the greatest challenges.

I like this picture a lot for that, cornered and wounded, he's in a vulnerable position, but you can also see that he's calculating the right maneuver he has to do to evade the incoming attacks while also cooking them with the plasma rifle he has there.
