Notice how the Nintendo angle of the dpad to the analogue is steeper compared to how close together the other pads lower directionals are. Perhaps that is aiding in it being an easier lower position dpad to use?

I've made failed designs where a small stick was inside the diamond button formation, it lowered down in between. Six can be done, often the decision to place the buttons aside the stick or above it can change the feel.
