You can build your own arcade stick for 2600 if you want, it has no discrete logic and is just simple pole-to-ground but the Epyx 500xj might be what you're looking for. It's ergonomically designed for right-hand-on-stick though, that's a hurdle for many people.

Xbox360 is my fav controller. XboxOne I believe has a better D-pad but weirder shoulder buttons, but I haven't played one long enough to stand by my statements.

From a nostalgia perspective, the Saturn 3D pad is tops. Going back it now, it isn't quite so nice, but it was my favorite until the XBox came along.

But from a REALLY nostalgic view, a real golden oldie was my Epyx 500 that I used on my Amiga. Most reactive joystick I ever used. On the flat side where the brand name is, I installed a red toggle and a red variable autofire knob. I followed a circuit board schematic I found in a computer mag and soldered it all together with parts from Radio Shack. I did all that work when I was in jr high, back when kids were men, and men were Rambo.

Its an Epyx 500xj but there's models for all kinds of systems and they're all called 500xj. The classic one-button variety the 2600 and Amiga take are the most common but they're all starting to dry up. Quite common in the day but the combination of quality and only medium-durability has them disappearing now.
