Double post, shit.

I've tried Fallout 1 before and I really didn't like it. Something about the combat and the dungeons just felt way too slow for me.

Although in general, I have a hard time getting into the series because the world and atmosphere is so bleak and gross.

That being said, just installed Ultima IV, and was already charmed by the intro. Seems like it'll be great!

This series is literally too archaic to be enjoyable, even by retro game standards.

Ultima 4 came free with my GoG account, but I've never installed it.

Now I'm home sick, and in my moments of clarity I've been reading the manual, it seems pretty cool, and off the beaten path of what I usually play (which is arcade-style games or action titles).

I guess my question is that since it mentions the stories of Ultima 1-3, is it worth my time to play those, or are they mostly just background for the rest of the series? Will it matter that I haven't played 1-3?

Other advice is welcome but I'd rather avoid spoilers or other 'optimal playthrough' info.

Ultima 4 is one of the best things to come out of censorship.
Richard Garriot had formed his own company (Origin) for Ultima 3 after having previously worked with Sierra On-line. This exposed him directly to fan mail where parents were concerned that the game encouraged stealing and killing. As a consequence he thought about teaching players more virtuous behavior and made the sequel revolve about that which caused a radical shift for the RPG genre.

Ok, so I wanted to play Ultima series and started with the IV one, because it's the first adventure of the Avatar. Then I answered the questions truthfully and got a bard. The proble I have is how is that guy useful. He gets half of magic power according to the manual and so do Rangers and Paladins. But rangers use bows and stuff while Bards only use slings and crossbows and Paladins have access to all weapons and armor as well as half the magic power. Is there any reason to take Bard over Ranger and any of them over the Paladin?
