Does the Playstation actually have sprite capabilities, or are they just '2D' polygons sorted by the 2D engine? Because I know, devs could use the polygons as flat surfaces and display sprites as textures. This can be done with the 2D sprite capabilities. The Saturn appears to be basically a raster machine that displays in sprite/ tiles. Even the 3D polygon games are 2D sprites being spun around in 3D bill boarding style. Like this chunky Jill Valentine model is basically a bunch of 4-sided sprites called quads. The Saturn is basically just a 2D sprite machine that can render sprites as polygons. The Playstation either is a completely triangle based machine, or also has some sort of 2D rendering hardware as well. I always kinda felt that the Saturn worked best with 2D scaling sprites and 3D environments.

Decathlete is a weird game. It uses the Saturns 'high-res' interlaced mode, runs at 60fps. Uses a Saturn background layer and has some polygon characters.
