The whole thing is a more unique JRPG, which is why I love it. You don't have a traditional party: you summon various creatures or warriors to fight with you, though they're only around for a certain amount of turns. Instead of spells of your own, you have special items like lasso to parylse enemies. There's also level grinding. You still can grind money for weapons, but you (and your summons) get stronger by getting getting a heart piece type item at the end of dungeons (including bonus ones) and getting more summons.

The story isn't normal for the time either. Instead it's more of a into another word sort of young fiction fare, and at times it feels a bit like a fever dream. And I honestly think Maria drowned to death in the intro.

You sadly still get a typical NES level of constant random encounters, though. I think that's the weakness of the game since the random encounters are just a nuisance now that grinding is gone.
