There aren't many main roads, and those are clogged so going distances is tedious. Most of the area is small towns, with one metropolitan area that would be as big as a suburb outside a city like NYC. That's were most of the commercial and (what little of) industrial there is. Then the rest of Vermont is mostly small towns catering to rich people (like Stowe). Pic is what an avg town looks like
