The problem with this is that battles are where the only real gameplay of JRPGs lies. If you take away that all you're left with is a visual novel where you have to physically walk your character to the next story point.

Or if you make it in more of a western style and add puzzles you would end up with an adventure game.

For better or worse, RPG games are sort of defined by their battle systems, so you can't take that away and still have the same genre. But if you don't like that aspect, there are other related genres you could look into.

If you want a game that rolls dice at everything you do, and it's possible to slip on a loose rock and break your leg then play IVAN.

Even more if you're not concerned with staying retro. Some people are trying really weird things looking for new ways to incorporate something resembling roleplaying into video games.

Are you sure?
It looks like it has slots for pictures where items should go, and when I played it there was only text for items, and there were more action buttons.

Pic related, I got it from Google, but it looks more like the version I had on my old computer.

Were there versions with pictures for items? Because I remember (non-English speaking country) not knowing what a Staple Remover was, and getting no hint from any pictures when I played it.
