I think the gene system is great in theory but it kind of is diminished by how easy III is as well as the fact you only will use the them in boss fights.

I think too many people go in expecting like the others which is a real shame. I went in not expecting exactly BoF and ended up really liking it. The battle system is interesting and always requires you to pay attention. Also the atmosphere is phenomenal, it has a great moody vibe to it. It's not perfect but I like it.
