What are examples of retro games that had a bad initial version but got a re-release (or a mod) that significantly overhauled it into a great game?

Not examples like Street Fighter 3 or Kingdom Hearts 2 which have rereleases that are much better, since their vanilla versions are still good. I want something that was MEDIOCRE or BAD but got redeemed.
