Why the edges of the pixel should become less steep when it's outputting 256 pixels instead of 512?
I assume that the pixel output logic is running at 10.64-10.73mhz and video DAC just (tries to) outputs the same pixel twice in 256 pixel mode.
This question doesn't make much sense to me.
It's about characteristics of the video output circuits of the device and the video amplifier and processing circuits in the display to determine how sharp the picture looks.
A modern graphics card could output a low /vr/ frequency with a higher amount of upper sidebands resulting into much steeper edges compared to real /vr/ hardware as the analog output DACs are rated for much higher frequencies in the 3 digit mhz range.
