To be completely honest, this game was quite bad.

For comparison sake:
>Spyro 1 300MB
>Crash Bandicoot 439.42 MB
>Croc 308.35 MB
>Rayman 429.06 MB
>Lomax 547.24 MB
What black magic did Nintendo use to cram all of Mario 64 content into 8 (eight) Megabytes?

What are some classic games that you didn't get to play until recently, that you thought would be complete overrated shit but ended up living up to your expectations?

Pic related for me,

Why does this game have so little platforming? Not counting rainbow ride, and the bowser levels, it seems like on every stage only the first star counts as platforming while the rest are padded with gimmicks. They almost all come down shoot yourself out of cannon, put on a green or blue hat to get the star in an obvious location, or just keep taking the same route as star one, but take a small detour (tick tock clock is literally all this).

Look at dire dire docks. Not one of the stars require you to do any platforming except for the pole jumping one.

The best thing about this game is the movement.

Nobody ever tried to copy it.

Why?

>played this game off and on since I first tried it at a dentist's office in '96 my foster parents had a PSX instead
>only got to 70 stars twice
>just finished going back to 100% it

compared to newer games, it's really not aged all that well, but it's still a fantastic game. only a couple stages really had me scratching my head at where to go like finding where the blue coins spawn in hazy maze cave, and the mechanics are mostly pretty smooth.

fuck tiny-huge island though. only stage in the game that gave me any significant problems, the rest of the stages I finished fairly easily.

This thing marked a sharp decline. Period.
Take a look at the Mario franchise before this game, and after.
This piece of garbage single handedly took the greatest platforming series of all time and turned it into Disney-tier kiddie fodder.
Call me a troll all you want, it wont make me any less correct.

Matthewmatosis has done a Super Mario 64 analysis (immensely insightful as ever) and is going to review all main series 3D Mario games. Thus, why don't we have an SM64 thread once in a while? Perhaps even a "3D platformers" thread. What are you favourites? My favourite 5th gen 3D platformer is Mario 64 allright, but christ was Spyro fun and damned if Crash Bandicoot didn't look absolutely stunning.

How could it go so wrong?

You would think Super Mario Bros. gameplay would be easy enough to transfer into a 3D style, but SM64 was absolutely nothing like any Mario game before it. Why was it such a redundant collect-a-thon? Was that the only 3D game Nintendo knew how to make at the time?

Are there any ways to make the controls more manageable? They're way too clunky and mario slides too fucking much. Why couldn't it have been like banjo kazooie?

Is there a right or wrong approach in remaking or updating a classic video game for modern audiences?

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vNQjcfwNdXU

Yesterday I came across footage of the DS version of Super Mario 64 and while the game is technically superior to the original, I thought some of the changes made it inferior.

I won't argue much on aesthetic changes, as that could be the nostalgia talking (although, seeing Bowser in his current model move similarly to the N64 versions looks awkward). However, I'm not a fan of the DS game making players start out as Yoshi and having to unlock Mario later on. What made Super Mario 64's opening so great is that it was the first time Mario was in 3D and the game encouraged players to go nuts and move him anyway they could outside the castle. The DS opening takes away from that with its lengthy beginning.

Is there a retro game more speedrun than Super Mario 64? It's like the act of speedrunning this game has been made into a sport all in its own.

Downloading some games off the Wii Virtual Console (including pic related, which i've only ever played like 3 levels but the nostalgia makes it one of my favorites). What's the best controller for Virtual Console? Gamecube Controller or the Wii Classic Controller? Also are there any great games out there I should download (thought about Super Metroid because I'm a big fan of the Prime games and Fusion) i'll probably do Ocarina if I can't think of anything else since it's a great game that I enjoy.
