Of all of Doom 3's mistakes, the shotgun was probably among the biggest.
I'd suggest using the chainsaw instead, it doesn't need to reload, and actually has crazy good DPS, if you're willing to get into the habit of maneuvering out of the way for melee attacks (easier than it sounds).
In Resurrection Of Evil, the Super Shotgun kind of makes up for it, because it has twice the pellets and kind of gives you the Doom 2 performance (so there's usually enough shot density that you can kind of hit things farther than at arms length), but you don't get to have the chainsaw.

Well, it's pretty cool looking, and the manner you reload two shells at a time is actually a great idea, but the spread pattern is beyond comical, you literally cannot score a good hit at an "across the street" distance.
Like it isn't even realistically plausible to make buckshot this worthless in real life, even if you were to make your own gun from a piece of pipe.

Contrast to the original game, where the pump-shotgun actually has a reasonably realistic spread, letting you actually use it at medium distances, being excellent for incoming cacos.
