Monkey Island was more or less my first real point & click, and as a big fan of the point & click genre (have beaten 12 or so in the last month), can say this poster is right to recommend it as a first game. Main reasons being:
1) it has consistent logic in solving its puzzles
2) doesn't soft-lock you with the option of using items in the wrong place, or let you miss items you need later
3) you can't die (aside from that one joke death underwater)
and 4) it's a fun setting
