They used to have master programmers for all sorts of platforms like the Ricoh chips for MSX/NES, Motorola's 68000, etc. That experience served them well, but I am guessing the talent has been eroded by rising costs so they cannot keep up with the complications of x86 nor x64 and it is just more cost effective to outsource.

I remember the mermaid in Goonies 2 did not have seashells and possibly underaged.

I really enjoyed the games from Konami, Capcom, Tecmo, Natsume, and Nintendo. Great memories bringing it over to cousins' homes and playing games alongside them. That TV commercial with CRTs bursting out the sides of a space station capturing people with the games got me to get the Deluxe Set. Between all the games of the NES, the NES itself, arcade games, Transformers, Robotech, Voltron, and Ghibli movies of the day convinced my younger self all the best stuff came from Japan. The system is still in my top 5 non-PC consoles because of all the fun I have with it.

While it is a very fun game, it is not the best to me. I remember calling all the Toys R' Us in the area to find one that had the game in stock. The previews in Nintendo Power and the fun of the first two Super Mario games convinced me to get it asap. I never understood why the game remained as Nintendo Power's #1 ranked game (with Final Fantasy at #2) for so long; I liked it a lot, maybe even more than World, but I enjoyed other games as much or more too in its day.

It was one of my favorites back then. First played it at one of my cousin's friend's place, and love the game that I had to get it for myself to see the game through. Never saw the movie, but the game was great. I also remember playing the first game back when the nearby city had a Chinatown inside a restaurant where they had booths set up with the tabletop arcade games. I used to wonder why the first game from the arcade was never released for the NES.
